It's been rumoured that Jonas Oberg said:

What about Kontor? Last I looked, it was being done under GPL, and aimed 
to provide all these functions...

Its become clear that ease-of-use and ease-of-installation are probably the 
most important things gnucash should strive for.  That said, I would
like to see advanced features focusing on investment tracking, home-equity 
type features, bill-pay & on-line banking etc.  In that sense,  I want
to encourage as much technology commonality & interoperability as possible
without loosing sight of the original objective, viz ease-of-use & ease-of
-install.

But ultimately, what happens is up to those who actually do the work, 
write the code, and due to the volunteer nature of it all, there is no 
way to force people into doing other than what they feel like ...
