I'd just like to get a view from everyone, particularly Linas,
(whoops, almost typed Linus), on some definitive goals and a schedule
for a 1.3/1.4 release.
It seems pretty clear that the gnome code is more featureful than
the motif code, and avoids the version number minefield of
of lesstif. Tyson Dowd has chosen to package
the CVS gnome version rather than the lesstif version for Debian.
We've also added quite a few features recently,
and I personally promise a few more in the near feature.
However, at the moment, the only ones who have access to this code
are the developers using CVS and applying Dave's patches.
The code doesn't seem to be particularly crash-prone either.
It would be great to get this new code into the hands of users (who
seem to be screaming out for a program like Gnucash, provided it
has enough stability and features to be a replacement for Quicken),
but if people have major changes they'd like to implement in the near
future it'd be silly to try and make a release in the midst of such
changes.
There are only three more features I'd personally
like to add before I'd consider starting a beta/release program with
the gnome code as (probably) the primary target(if I decided such things):
1) The improved reporting system previously discussed.
I haven't done any work on this, as yet, but I will
start work on it before the week is out, all being well.
This is by far the biggest thing I'd like sorted out,
but getting the reporting system back to where it was,
but with the new architecture, shouldn't be too difficult.
2) Saving configuration options. This is a relatively small
job, probably no more than a couple of nights work.
3) More nitpicking on i18n. Mostly a matter of some relatively
small patches.
Obviously, bug fixes and wart removals must also happen before a
release.
As a further point, I think the changed widget set probably justifies
a major revision number bump. There's nothing like a little
self-promotion :)
Undoubtedly others have other goals they'd like to achieve for the
next release, and have probably been thinking about this for far
longer than the relatively short amount of time I've been working
on gnucash. I'd just like a bit of clarification on what goals we'd
like to achieve for the next release, and what kind of timeframe we're
setting ourselves to do them in.
