Well, we might need a better name for it.
'security' means 'a piece of paper worth something e.g. share of stock'
The idea in the gnucash engine is that you exchange something of type A
(where A is usually 'currency') for a different amount of type B (where
B is usually a 'security' but may be a different currency, actually, may
be anything of value).
When balancing accounts, we have to make sure that all numerical
amounts are in the smae 'currency', and/or that we've recorded a
price (an exchange rate) so that everything can be converted to a common
currency.
Usually, the 'security' field should contain the stock-ticker symbol
(if its a stock), or the ISO currency code (if its a different
currency). Problems arise when stock-ticker sysmbols match currency
codes ...
