I have a simple question about what to do with opening balances. In
starting my gnucash accounts file, I had to put starting balances into
quite a few accounts. Since these opening balances didn't really come
from any other account(s), they had no transfer from/to field. I tried
"scrubbing" all of my accounts tonight, and all of the "opening
balances" showed up in an new account called "Imbalance - USD". Now I
don't really want to leave that account there as a 'dumping ground' for
opening balances - in the future 'opening balances' will come from other
accounts that get closed and the funds transferred. But the accounts
that existed when I initiated gnucash, that situation just doesn't exist
yet.
So, my question - what do you do when initiating gnucash on a set of
accounts for accounts that existed prior to gnucash and so the money
cannot be 'transferred from' any other account. The double entry method
just doesn't seem to work for those 'opening balances'. The accounts the
opening balances got transferred from no longer exist and to create them
in gnucash for the sole purpose of transfering money leaves you with the
same problem of where the 'opening balance' for that account came from.
Starting with more than zero seems to be a problem. I have to believe
this problem has been solved before (probably many times), but the
solution isn't immediately obvious to me.
Any solution gratefully entertained.
