I can appreciate the reasoning. If we are voting I still vote to restore
the 'open file' icon. I never found the two icons confusing - let the mouse
dwell for a few seconds and the icon explanation box pops open with the
explanation of the icon, thus even first time users can easily tell which
icon is which.

The file history feature is great and should be retained, I use both.
