Actually, no. Helix Code will be selling the "gnome CD" which
simplifies a LOT of these problems. They can reliably know exactly
what version of each gnome/gtk lib is installed and don't have many
dependencies outside the CD beyond libc6. They can basically blow
away anything that conflicts with what they're installing and build
from a clean foundation.

Well, I guess it's a somewhat selfish POV but I see this problem from
my perspective as a developer for a company trying to commercially
release gnucash. Whether or not Helix Code puts gnucash on their CDs
doesn't really bear on me, and the problem of how to install gnucash
from CD on a system with unknown installed software remains.

Sure. It seems to me that (1) this problem is real, (2) it hasn't
been solved, and (3) a solution would benefit a bunch of people. It
seems fairly likely to me that an installer as we've discussed might
be a separate development project for us (by "us" I mean Gnumatic)
since it's on our "critical path" and not on the gnucash project's.
