Mark, Your description of the process you are using doesn't sound correct to me.
In Double line mode you would need to enter the date and description. There is no place to enter an amount and no Split command available here. At this point you would either have to hit Enter to open up the line for the first split (which will be to the account of the register you have created the new transaction in which will appear in the Account column. You could also reach this point by using the Tab key. You can then enter the amount in the appropriate column. You can also add appropriate information to the Memo field for that split if you wish At this point you need to use the tab key to open the line for the second split. It is here that you select the account for the second split. Normally Gnucash will automatically place the amount you have entered in the first split in the other column. If you are not creating a transaction with more than two splits, you are done, just click anywhere in the rest of the window or in the line for entering another new transaction and your transaction will be recorded. If your transaction has more than 2 splits, correct the amount for the second split and then tab or hit Enter. GnuCash will then open another line with the amount of the now third split in the appropriate column with an Ophan account displayed. Enter any Memo information and select the correct account. Again if you have further splits to add, correct the amount and repeat this procedure until your transaction is complete. This is how it works in V3.6 on Linux and AFAIK in should be the same under Windows 10.
