Simon, I stick with the default compressed xml file data storage (the default) with Gnucash and I NEVER autosave, that way if I stuff something up during the session I just exit and tell Gnucash to NOT save the changes and then re-open Gnucash with the previous version of the data file and start over. It's easy enough and quick enough to click SAVE after major actions such as getting quotes, doing a reconciliation, creating new accounts, yada yada yada :-)
