Even though I can't see the reports because all I'm seeing is a black
window, if I print them, they seem to print OK.

If you use Linux, there can be an issue with webkitgtk that can result
in blank reports.
Actually, this indicates something useful to isolate the problem when
experiencing blank reports on the screen.
If you are able to print them and that looks OK or even just export them
and that looks OK then you have isolated the problem to what DISPLAYS
the reports on screen (problem not in the report generation process)
