As I understand it, you wanted a report listing (parent) accounts and
sub accounts (or "children" accounts) together with their various
    totals.
Have you tried the Account Summary report?

The question is how to show these totals/subtotals on report X, not about some other report Y where they might be showing by default.

If you need report X, then you have to learn "what are all of the report options available for report X". OR you might ask "for report X, if I want to see ...... what report options should I select?" << if you tried but couldn't find options that worked >>

To (re) answer the original question, for both the Balance Sheet report and the Income Statement report there ARE options to show both the child accounts and subtotals, with subtotals either before or after.

Remember, with gnucash you first run a report (open it) and it comes up as currently set (possibly default) and then you use "report options" to change the report to what you want them to be. You can the save.
