I’m pretty sure TIAA Inc. (formerly TIAA-CREF) has decommissioned the server
queried by the F::Q tiaacref method.
I can find no way inside my TIAA account to download historical price data for
the TIAA funds. The old link I used would reveal the address to the server when
it coughed up the data response.

Also, all the TIAA funds have real ticker symbols now. The CREF Stock Fund R1
(formerly holding the pseudo ticker CREFstok) is now QCSTRX. Class R2 is
QCSTPX. Class R3 is QCSTIX. And Class R4 is QCSTFX.

The Qx quotes are available via Yahoo and Alphavantage, though there are some
gotchas. After 8pm on a market day, Yahoo-web will offer a quote for the
current day’s closing value to 2 decimel places. TIAA uses 4 places internally.
Yahoo as JSON, if it isn’t barfing, will provide the same day’s closing value
to 4 places. Alphavantage’s TIAA quotes are 2 decimal places, and are delayed
at least overnight, and maybe until after start of next business day.

I have never successfully retrieved a quote for class R4 from Yahoo as JSON,
though they are available at the lower precision from Yahoo-web and
Alphavantage. QCSTFX launched in September 2022. Yahoo only has historical data
for this class back to November 2024. Yahoo has historical data for other funds
back to the beginning of 2020 (which I think coincided with the launch of the
Qx ticker symbols). Since the original CREF Stock fund launched in 1952, we’ve
lost access to a whole lot of historical data. But current and some recent data
are available outside the captive TIAA server.

All of the Qx ticker symbols are listed in the TIAA descriptions of the funds.
If you own any of the captive retirement funds, then you can log into your TIAA
account to find the ticker symbols, and then query outside sources for day to
day tracking quotes.
