Yes, "Period" is the accounting period, which you can set in Edit »
Preferences » Accounting Period.

I tried it just now, when General Journal was the current panel. When I
clicked on Accounts, I saw that the "Total (Period)" amounts had updated
as expected.

I changed the accounting period back to start and end of this year,
while the Accounts panel was visible. It was not redrawn automatically.
I pressed Ctrl+R, and that refreshed the screen and showed the expected
amounts for the current year.
