I switched to Transaction Journal view as default a decade ago and now I only change views to follow a discussion on the topic here on the list!

I even forget to do so sometimes trying to figure out what a new user is seeing when they can't figure out what GnuCash is up to or how to do something with a more than simple transaction.

I don't consider the view 'messy' or cluttered in any way. I always have all the transaction info available without extra clicks. If I have to search for a transaction beyond a quick scroll, I use the Find function. Scroll searching usually requires having to view the splits anyway to verify it is indeed the one you were looking for, so I might as well just have them always visible.

I'd say less than 5% of my transactions are simple (only 2 accounts) perhaps even less. I'm just guessing.

And for those who really like the Basic style for some reason, but occasionally want to see full detail, there is of course "Auto-Split".

Regards,
Adrien

Ok, I think that David T is correct, but I failed to notice because my
modus operandi is to just switch the register view whenever I need to
without even thinking about it.
