I don't understand; if the path is stored in my preferences file separately
on each machine, and the I use a relative path (just filename with no path
separators -- for example "Invoice_TLT_32711.pdf", there is no separator
involved, right? Hopefully, that will be fine.

And I very much try to avoid these because of this issue precisely.
