Can it be that the problem with stock splits is the lack of a "stock lot" 
structure in GNUCash to hold the basis and original acquisition date?  Each 
stock lot in a split would be split and the basis adjusted.  Fractional shares 
would be need to be held in the stock lot, and if fractional shares are sold, 
the sales may have to be proportionately distributed to the lots, so even inf 
the account holdings have no fractional shares, the lots may.  If taxability is 
a concern, sales need to be allocated to lots, usually oldest first but you may 
like short term gains?  It seems complicated, but people have been processing 
it on paper for a long time.
