*Version / platform:* GnuCash 5.17 (updated from 5.16 on 2026-09-28), Windows 11 Pro, German locale (de-DE)

*Description:*
Since updating from 5.16 to 5.17, the euro sign (€) is displayed incorrectly. Instead of "€", three separate characters are shown: "â", a control character (U+0082, rendered as a hex box) and "¬". These are the UTF-8 bytes of € (E2 82 AC) interpreted as Latin-1/Windows-1252. Example in the account tree: "0,00 â¬" instead of "0,00 €".

*Where it occurs:*

 * Account tree (all balance columns)
 * Currency list (Tools → Security Editor, "Show currencies" enabled):
the symbol for EUR is wrong, while other currencies with special
characters (e.g. FK£) are displayed correctly
 * Not affected: the euro sign is displayed correctly when entering text

*Settings:*
Default currency preference is set to EUR.

*Already tried (no effect):*

 * Creating a brand-new empty book: the same wrong symbol appears, so
this is not caused by the data file or user data

*Expected behavior:*
"€" is displayed correctly everywhere, as in 5.16.
