I just install 5.17 on two Windows 11 computers.
I used
1. Exit any instances of GNUCash that are running.
2. Uninstall GNUCash
3. Delete the "gnucash" folder located in "C:\Program Files (x86)"
4. Install 5.17
https://github.com/Gnucash/gnucash/releases/download/5.17/gnucash-5.17.setup.exe

Yes, I get a Microsoft message that this might be harmful. I select more
information then install anyway.

I don't think the source matters. I've seen that warning from Defender before
for quite a few other .exe files. I think the main thing is to be sure you're
getting the installation file from a trusted verifiable source. For Larry's
issue, it's probably easiest to just click the "More Info" link (assuming he
sees it), and then "Run Anyway". Of course, that also assumes he got the
installation file via gnucash.org and
https://sourceforge.net/projects/gnucash/files/gnucash%20%28stable%29/5.17/gnucash-5.17.setup.exe/download.
