Well, no, it's a different bug but needs to be fixed anyway.
Does it work if you create an *empty* ~/.gnumed/gnumed.conf
(but *not* say --conf-file=...) ?
If so I'd add
touch ~/.gnumed/gnumed.conf
to /usr/bin/gnumed.
In 0.2.9 all this trouble is gone by design.
