Firstly try to understand the basic usage of the dialogue box:
For example:
Name => Cost_per_litre
Expression => $B$6
so that you can use cost_per_litre in formulas instead of $B$6.

You may be asking: Does Gnumeric implement so-called "natural language" 
labels introduced by MS in Excel 97, which if confronted with what could 
plausibly be defined names (but are not defined) searches through the 
whole worksheet?

About two minutes experimentation leads me to the conclusion: No, not in 
Gnumeric 1.6.3 (Windows version).
