On reflection, you just need: $ gpg-connect-agent reloadagent /bye And if that weren't enough, this would be prettier: $ gpg-connect-agent killagent /bye $ gpg-connect-agent /bye The latter is only needed if the first thing you do is SSH; it is automatically started for GnuPG.
