Even booting into single user mode does not let me log in.

The same here. Allocating more RAM for vmware doesn't help either, but I found 
a (maybe) helpful posting in the OpenSolaris forum:

So the problem could be caused by my processor. I know, my processor is quite 
old, but it's still fast enough for everything I need it for. So, is having a 
SSE capable processor a new requirement for OpenSolaris?
