This has been requested in the past and I agree with the need for
it. I am a far cry from seeing all of the core development details but
here is what's going on AFAIK:
The core group is attempting to release NCP 1.0 which will basically
look like a standard OpenSolaris distribution with a few extra packages.
The idea seems to be to get the very base system stable so that the dist
is at least as usable as other OpenSolaris distributions. Development
will soon lead to NCP 1.1 which may have more tools to help users
contribute.
There are some critical bugs that are keeping NCP 1.0 from happening
that deal with replacing basic system libraries during an apt-get
upgrade or a debbootstrap type process. This effectively means that
upgrading from a current Nexenta dist will break your system (badly) and
that zones can not be created.
I am volunteering time to ensure that:
1) zones work out of the box in this release
2) configure some base infrastructure for community interaction
In about a week I plan on having a short document on steps required
to contribute to Nexenta as well as the basic infrastructure to support
the howto. Once Martin gives the OK to post new content I'll do so on
the relevant wiki.
Martin Man has been working on a new website theme for nexenta.org
and thinking about content organization. He's currently out of reach of
stable internet so progress has slowed on that front for a little bit.
The #gnusol chatroom has been functionally deprecated in favor for
#nexenta. Right now #nexenta redirects to ##nexenta since the previous
owner of #nexenta can not be found. There is a long thread on that topic.
This is all off the top of my head and is probably lacking some
important points but it's at least some visibility into progress. If you
want to take this info and present it elsewhere (blog/irc/...), be my guest.
Just to throw in my humble view for the moment:
I think there is a lot of interest for Nexenta but the tools for
community interaction are lacking. Some things that would be nice to
have out of the box would be things like apache/php/tomcat/java and
those either don't exist or are out of date. Once NCP 1.0/1.1 is
released, I would like to see people organize and help bring these and
supporting packages in. I've begun to compile packages to get there but
there are some that don't trivially compile from debian/ubuntu sources.
