Sorry for the gap between emails; life has to intervene.
I can't believe it but It worked.
I thought the partition was a bit corrupted (its not unusual when
using Debian GNU/Linux for the Free Software version of CHKDSK to go
and correct a few bits of that partition. I thought solaris drivers
were simply to strict to allow this to exist.

I can't understand why it hasn't worked for me previously, however the
most obvious answer is that I didn't type "mount -F pcfs
/dev/dsk/c0d0p1 /mnt/files" so that was probably it, though I find it
hard to believe. (I got to the stage where i was iterating the numbers
hoping to find a fat32 device!)

Right next step is to try and det up nfs as a client and server.
I should be fine on this, but If I have problems I'll post back to the list.
