I swapped mine out and changed from an external to internal drive (presumably irrelevant, but saves lots of time). Result is a successful Nexenta install. Mouse still does not work, but at least it does not choke the system. (Both mice work fine under Linux.)
Some offline correspondents pointed out that Xorg's Nvidia drivers are broken. Unfortunately Elatte does not have a native package with the driver from Nvidia themselves, so I fall back to the VESA driver. X starts but mouseless X is a challenge.
