A bit of a pity, because "losing" two disks even on such a box is
already quite a bit. Especially for the bigger ones, where you lose 2 TB
for the system that way. We are currently trying if it is feasible to
boot via NFSroot, but that's a longer shot.

I have not tried that yet, I know tht grub can easily be attached to
serial, question is if the Solaris kernel from Nexenta is serial aware.
I can see if I can mimick the Solaris10 settings and report back.

Since we just started it's probably not ideal, but here it is:

# block 1
zpool create -f $ZPOOLNAME raidz2 c{0,1,5,7,8}t0d0 c{6,0,1,5,7,8}t1d0

# block 2
zpool add -f $ZPOOLNAME raidz2 c{6,0,1,7,8}t2d0 c{6,0,1,5,7,8}t3d0

# block 3
zpool add -f $ZPOOLNAME raidz2 c{0,1,5,7,8}t4d0 c{6,0,1,5,7,8}t5d0

# block 4
zpool add -f $ZPOOLNAME raidz2 c{6,0,1,5,8}t6d0 c{6,0,1,5,7,8}t7d0

# two hot spares
zpool add -f $ZPOOLNAME spare c5t2d0 c7t6d0

# create a small zfs file system with reservation, this will help to
keep ZFS working once it's filled up
zfs create -o reservation=10M $ZPOOLNAME/badtimes

I would like to have a better set-up which does not need two spares - I
think one hot spare should be fine and still ensures that I cold survive
one of the 6 controllers to go dead. This way (with 500GB drives) I'm using:

disks gross capacity (GB)
2 1000 system
9+2 4500+1000 1st raidz2
9+2 4500+1000 2nd raidz2
9+2 4500+1000 3rd raidz2
9+2 4500+1000 4th raidz2
2 hot spares

Meaning I "only" have a net capacity of 18000G starting from a gross
capacity of 24000G, i.e. sacrificing 25% to safety and system.

I would like to hear a small discussion which set-up is better/more
reasonable, where would be the right platform for that?

Sounds not too bad, probably less error prone that multiple manual
installs. However, one would need to find a way to correct the lesser
problems (local configuration changes from one box to another).

Anyway, thanks for the very interesting answer!
