I build with 4.1 regularly but, like you, I do it in debug mode. It would be good to try a build with debug mode turned off to see what the issue is.
Does anyone have a backtrace which might give a clue to what the problem is?

the gcc-4.1 compiler has an issue of some sort with its optimiser,
