Frederick, I would save every piece of damaged document in special containers. Today we have technology that can fill the blanks (Dead Sea Scrolls as an example).
I also saw the Director of GU library handling old maps with bare hands without wearing gloves!!! ( In your video) If the librarians do not know how to handle rare documents, how do you expect students/ researchers do the same ? The same is true at the Archives and at Central Library.
