Two observations:

1) The Portugal of today is markedly different from the country's ethos
even 25 years ago and the main difference may be European union. My
subjective opinion is it does *feel* somewhat - and occasionally
significantly - less racist against Indian people, or more generally South
Asians, than most of the rest of Europe. That's an impressive thing, in its
own way.

2) Nonetheless, it would be too much to expect Portugal to be immune to
racism of the right-wing European variant, and it never has been so. Yet,
every single time racism in Portugal is broached as a topic, in my
experience, the standard Portuguese response is stubborn denial that such a
thing could ever be perceived in the first place. That itself is quite
worrisome, as is the refusal to accept that others experience the society
in different ways.
