What a great article, Vivek! “ The Uninvited: Goa and the Parties not Meant for its People. You get the gist in the title itself. With catastrophic effect to Goa’s environment, culture and society, the state is perverted wholescale “for the purpose of entertainment for others.” I often feel this exclusion, especially so on social media and and more recently on Facebook groups like Offbeat Goa. I have been thinking of this for a while - I don’t know why more access is not afforded to local people to attend the festivals at Monte and other concerts. You see the same folks doing the same annual dance. Maybe some well heeled Goans can provide some funds for buses to leave from parish churches, possibly shepherded by a cura? It’s intimidating for people anywhere in the world to go to fancy venues but with a little encouragement and the company of others I sure they would enjoy it. Maybe the well known Goa College of Arts which has produced so many excellent artists many of who you have showcased can start some outreach efforts to bring Goans to art exhibitions, talk about paintings and art in general. Unlike in the USA we have not been taught art appreciation in colleges. It has to start in the villages which from an earlier article of yours about Asagão, we are also about to lose to rampant building, environmental degradation, and the entertainment of others.
