The recent developments do affect Goa University in a significant way, though the impact will be felt only after a certain period of time. An immediate area of concern is the catchment area, as all these institutions will primarily compete for the same set of students and impact enrolment levels in existing institutions. A Private university, which has started its under-construction campus six month back, has enrolled around 600 students, 80 percent of them from Goa and already is claiming itself as the 'Top University in Goa'. I am sure the management will be under immense pressure to perform, which will get passed on to the teachers and then to the students and huge effort will be maintained to put up visibility and accomplishment. The potential of two more state cluster Universities within Goa is a topic for separate discussion, as a model that is suited for large states and big universities is being implemented in toto for a small state. I do hope the government reads the suggestions that have been submitted to the House committee to study the Cluster University bill in greater detail. RAhul Tripathi
