VAJPAYEE READY TO PROVE MAJORITY: Apparently undeterred by the decision of
its ally-Telugu Desam Party-the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, said
he is ready to prove his majority in the Parliament, if required. He was
replying to questions about whether his government was under a cloud of
threat following constant nagging by some coalition partners, especially
TDP. (H)
NDA SURVIVES TDP SCARE: The TDP last night gave no indication of
withdrawing support to the BJP-led government at the centre but said it
would persist with its demand for sacking of controversial Gujarat Chief

NO THREAT TO GOVT: BJP: Bharatiya Janata Party national president Jana
Krishnamurthy ruled out any threat to the National Democratic Alliance
government at the Centre in view of the adamant stand taken by the TDP over
the Gujarat issue. The three-day national executive meet of the BJP, which
concluded in Panjim yesterday, resolved to focus on mass contact
programmes, deal with indiscipline within the party firmly and to mobilize
people on BJP ideology. (GT)
BJP CONCLAVE CONCLUDES ON SOUR NOTE: Amidst lingering threat to the BJP-led
National Democratic Alliance government at the Centre, the 3-day party's
national executive committee conclave ended yesterday on a sour note. The
concluding session, which was to conclude in the afternoon, was cut short
for allowing Prime Minister AB Vajpayee and other top party leaders to rush
back to New Delhi as the TDP has mounted up its pressure with the threat to
withdraw its support to the two-and-a-half-year-old Vajpayee government. (NT)
CITIZENS MARCH AGAINST GUJARAT KILLINGS: Hundreds of citizens marched
silently through the city of Panjim yesterday in a peaceful protest against
the state-abetted communal killings in Gujarat. The march, organised by
local NGOs, demanded, among other things, that Gujarat's Narendra Modi
government be dismissed and President's Rule imposed, that an inquiry under
a sitting Supreme Court judge be set up to probe the Godhra and post-Godhra
killings and punish the guilty, and that relief and rehabilitation measures
be strengthened and implemented without discrimination. The forum also
demanded that the Goa government immediately constitute a state human
rights commission and a state minorities commission. An open letter to
Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee was read out and unanimously adopted at

GOA: JINX FOR BJP: Goa as a venue for the national executive meeting
appears to be a jinx for the BJP-led government at the Centre. With Gujarat
casting a shadow over the deliberations and the possibility of TDP
withdrawing support, the Vajpayee government appears to be headed for a
trial of strength in Parliament shortly. In 1998, when the national
executive met here on 3 to 5 April, the development surrounding the fall of
the earlier Vajpayee government gathered momentum. (GT)
AFTER GOA VS GUWAHATI: Battle drums have become loud and clear at the end
of the three-day national executive meeting of the BJP in Goa and the
Congress Chief Ministers' conference in Guwahati. Nation-wide confrontation
between these to main contenders to power has become inevitable. Almost all
the political parties having representation in the Parliament and
particularly the NDA partners are likely to be drawn into the vortex of the
turmoil centering around controversial Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra

PARRIKAR FORMULA: "It is no surprise that the national executive of the
Bharatiya Janata Party, which was meeting in Goa, found the Goa formula of
survival so well articulated by Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, to bail
out his Gujarat counterpart Narendra Modi by asking him to seek fresh

PRAYER HALL ATTACKED IN MANGALORE: A prayer hall attached to a protestant
group of Moodabidri near Mangalore was attacked yesterday by about 60
people protesting against the alleged attempts to convert the local Hindus
to Christianity. Police said the attackers pelted stones on the hall
attached to the residence of Richard D'Souza, who conducts the Sunday
prayers. (NT)
MISAPPROPRIATION OF GOODS GALORE: Toothpaste, hair oil, chocolates, cashew
seed oil, steel and copper coils, worth a staggering amount of Rs.51 lakh,
which were dispatched from Ponda taluka to different parts of the country,
have not reached their destination. Since January 2001, Ponda police has
registered as many as 10 cases of misappropriation, following the
disappearance of the vehicles transporting the goods. (H)
SENIOR TIATRISTS TO BE FELICITATED: The Kala Academy will organise a Tiatr
Day celebration on 17 April at 5 pm at the Kala Academy. Joe Rose, Agnelo
D'Silva, Mariano Rodrigues, Josephine Dias and Rosario Dias are the five

MAYEM PROPERTY: The Supreme Court has directed that notices be issued to
the government of Goa, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, forest Minister
Prakash Phadte and other respondents in the petition filed by Antonio
Pereira for directions to the CBI to hold inquiries into complaints made by
him over the evacuee property in Mayem. (H)
CHAVAN SAYS SORRY: The Congress party's central observer Rajiv Chavan
criticized the State government headed by BJP for disturbing the communal
harmony by creating a split between different communities in the State.
While addressing a meeting in Curchorem, Chavan also tendered his apologies
for the mistakes committed by senior Congress leaders in Goa, and sought
the trust and faith of Goans. (GT)
LUIZINHO TO ATTEND MAY BALL IN QATAR: Former Chief Minister Luizinho
Faleiro and Goa Football Association President Joaquim Alemao will be the
chief guest and guest of honour respectively at the annual May Ball
organised by the Goan Overseas Association in Qatar on 16 May. (GT)
URGENT RESEARCH IN ANTARCTICA NEEDED: Governor Mohammad Fazal has said that
scientists have to understand the cause and consequences of breaking the
ice shelf which had survived the last ice age some 12000 years ago. This,
he said, clearly demonstrates the urgent need of research in Antarctica,
since Antarctic ice sheet is perhaps the earliest and surest indicator of

ALL-INDIA STIR TOMORROW: In response to a strike call given by the Central
Trade Union and Federations of Financial Sector Employees, workers in Goa
will join an all India strike tomorrow to protest against the anti-labour
policies of the Union government. Private sector employees in Goa under the
banner of AITUC, CITU and Hind Mazdoor Sabha, besides those working in
mining, commercial, insurance, industrial establishments, and banks will
participate in a morcha which will commence for the KTC bus stand in Panjim
at 9.30 and later culminate in a public meeting near the customs House. (GT)
WOMAN DIES IN MISHAP: Mariyan Dias (75) died in a fatal acceded reported
near the Quepem police station. The old woman was walking on the road when
she was knocked down by a scooter rider, Anthony Cardoz. (NT)
GOAN NOVEL GETS PRESTIGIOUS TRANSLATION: Goa's Konkani language got a
prestigious translation with Pundalik Naik's "Uppheaval" ("Acchev) just
becoming the first novel to get translated into English by the Oxford
University press publishing house. (H)
DR PRAMOD IS NEW IMA CHIEF: Dr Pramod Salgaokar was installed as the
president of the Indian Medical Association, Goa State branch, for the year
