POWER GHOST TO HAUNT MAUVIN AGAIN? The State government has laid its hands
on an important document of inquiry pertaining to power pilferage and theft
of power at the behest of the Power department by power guzzling units in
Goa, almost two years after the report was submitted to the government. (GT)

'CM CAN DISSOLVE HOUSE WHEN HE DEEMS IT FIT': "It is the constitutional
right of a party commanding the majority in the House to seek dissolution
on the grounds of political expediency," was the argument put forward by
State Advocate General, Mr Atmaram Nadkarni, before the division bench of
the Bombay High Court hearing the petition challenging the order of
Governor Mohammed Fazal for dissolving the State Assembly. (NT)

GOVT TO ABOLISH CONTRACT SYSTEM IN EDUCATIONAL FIELD: The State government,
in a cabinet meeting yesterday, decided to abolish the contract system for
full-time government primary school teachers and has regularized the
services of 75 such teachers with effect from June 3, 2002. (H)

CATHOLIC UNION CHIEF FLAYS PM'S SPEECH: The All India Catholic Union
national vice president Dr John Dayal said, "In cold-blooded cynicism,
Vajpayee has in one fell swoop defamed world religions, condoned state
terrorism, forgiven Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, and sought to
convert the bigotry and hate campaigns of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh
and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad into votes for the BJP. (GT)

WAKE UP, MGP WORKERS CALL UPON BOSSES: Dissatisfied 'foot-soldiers' of the
beleaguered MGP, led by former president Surendra Sirsat, have urged the
party's top brass to gear up for the polls at the earliest. "If this
lethargy continues at this rate, the party will be nowhere in these
elections," Sirsat warned. (H)

ASSOLDA PHONES DEAD: The telephone lines in Assolda (Quepem) went dead on
April 11 and the liens were not repaired until yesterday, according to the

MGP TO COME UP WITH ELECTION AGENDA SOON: The MGP president, Ms Shashikala
Kakodkar, said that she was preparing a concrete political agenda for
presenting before the people of the State ahead of the elections to the

CM BRANDS CONG AS COMMUNAL: Congress is the most communal party as against
the Bharatiya Janata Party, which is most secular of all political parties,
said chief Minister Manohar Parrikar yesterday, while replying questions
from reporters yesterday. (GT)

MEDICAL WASTE DUMPED ILLEGALLY IN MARGAO: Twenty-two private nursing homes,
15 dental clinics and 11 pathological laboratories. Excluding general
clinics, they together constitute 48 medical houses generating around 200
kilograms of medical waste per day in Margao and its suburbs. This
waste-barring a few exceptions-is conveniently dumped in the dustbins
earmarked for the municipal garbage. (H)

GOVT'S NOD FOR MADEI SURVEY: The State cabinet, which met yesterday,
approved the selection of National Hydro-Electric Power Corporation
Limited, a Government of India undertaking to conduct a survey and prepare
project reports for tapping hydro-electricity in Sattari area of the Madei
basin. (GT)

THAKRANS DENIED BAIL: The Second Additional Sessions Court denied bail to
Sanjay and Anjali Thakran, the accused in the double murder case of the
newly wedded Nandas, following the directions of the Panjim Bench of the
Bombay High Court that the case against them be re-opened. (H)

ASIA'S LONGEST TUNNEL: The Konkan Railway Corporation has 91 tunnels
aggregating to a total of 83.6 kms and nine tunnels out of these are longer
than two kms while its longest tunnel, the longest in Asia, the Karbude
tunnel in Ratnagiri is 6.5 kms long. (H)

CM, MINISTERS BUSY WITH INAUGURATIONS BEFORE POLLS: Eager to inaugurate
completed projects and lay foundation stones for new projects before the
election code of conduct is enforced, Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar
yesterday had a hectic day along with his deputy chief minister Ravi Naik

MILAGRES FEAST: Considered to be the most popular feast in Bardez, the
feast of Our Lady of Milagres was celebrated at the church of St Jerome in
Mapusa yesterday. During the mass, the main celebrant prayed for the
victims of the Gujarat trouble and also for peace. Both the parallel roads
leading to the church are virtually crowded by a large fair, most of the
