A month's mind mass will be held for the late Roldau Menezes at St.
Francis Xavier Church, (Mississauga, Canada) 5650 Mavis Road, (at
intersection of Mavis & Matheson, west side, South of 401, North of 403)
on April 22nd at 7.15 p.m.
The mass, offered by John Tavares, is a tribute to a beloved teacher of
the Nairobi Goan School, a friend and colleague to many here in Canada.

With the Election Commission gearing up to announce the dates for the Goa
Assembly Elections any moment now, we will definitely see a lot of acts of
monkey jumping by our politicians in the coming weeks. Goans will not be
surprised if the contenders for party tickets switch sides and change
colours not in the interest of Goa but for that lust and greed of Power
without which they just cannot survive.
Meanwhile Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar is desperately trying to woo the
voters by all stunts possible. It is expected that fearing defeat in Panjim
he may decide to contest in Mapusa. However, his acts of omission and
commission will follow and haunt him in whichever constituency he tries to
take refuge.
While in power he managed to silence all opposition. Now he has his decoy
candidates who will seek tickets with various opposition parties. Politics
in Goa has sunk to such depths! Parrikar has kept Churchill Alemao content
by giving his football team an unprecedented handsome grant of 25 lakhs. For
this and other favours Churchill has been blackmailed into keeping the Chief
Minister informed of all that goes on in the Congress Party. Senior Congress
leaders are well aware of this and consider Churchill to be the greatest
liability to the party. How to get rid of Churchill is something the
Congress camp cannot resolve.
It is also not clear where Pratapsingh Rane's loyalties lie. The Rane's are
a family that have benefited the most from Goa's political imbroglio.
Despite the BJP rule Mr Rane continued to be the Speaker of the Goa Assembly
as well as Chairman of Kala Academy. Mrs Rane has kept herself busy as
Chairman of Bal Bhavan while spendthrift son Vishwajeet has made the best of
it as Chairman of Goa Tourism Development Corporation driving it to
unprecedented bankruptcy. His mobile phone bills have immobilised the scarce
resources of this very much sought Corporation.
While the BJP was in power Rane kept the heat on and increased his
bargaining power by obliging Parrikar and not ruling on the umpteen
disqualification petitions against MLAs. The petitions died a natural death
with the dissolution of the Assembly. It is expected that both Father and
son may contest and you never know, Mrs Rane may also decide to dip in. But
on which ticket will they ride? The Ranes have kept everyone guessing.
Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar is extremely busy laying foundation stones
and inaugurating incomplete projects. He is desperate to win public
sympathy by even inaugurating public toilets. Whatever he does Mr Parrikar
is fighting a losing battle. Our IIT Chief Minister has got his calculations
wrong. His acts of the last few weeks has clearly demonstrated and proven
beyond doubt the fears that the BJP is a communal and casteist party. The
saffron robe is an outfit that has no place in the Goan wardrobe.

LEGISLATION DEMANDED TO CURB CHILD TRAFFICKING.

An anti-child prostitution day rally was organised by Arz, an
NGO working on issues of prostitution-related trafficking at
Baina Beach red-light area and the Bal Vaishyavritti Virodhi
Andolan (Campaign Against Child Prostitution).
Displaying placards and banners, distributing pamphlets and
shouting slogans, the rally strongly protested against the
existence of brothel-based prostitution of children at the
Baina beach.
The issues highlighted were the dedication of children that is
being practised in Goa and the need to stop trafficking of
children into prostitution.
It was emphasised that children are misled into prostitution
by the functioning of strong and deep-rooted networks of
trafficking.
The rally demanded for an immediate end to child dedication
and prostitution in Goa, strict action against traffickers and
the creation of a Law against child dedication in Goa and
appealed to be general public not to participate in any form of
selling or buying children for purposes of prostitution and to
openly voice their protests against such happenings.
The well attended rally commenced at Baina Beach red-light
area, moved the streets of the city of Vasco, and wound up
at the Municipal Square.
Another rally was held in Panaji, which was followed by a
street play that vividly depicted the methodology of dedication
and prostitution of children, the atrocities and influence of
perpetrators in order to keep children enslaved in prostitution
and continue further trafficking and the community's
participation in initiating action against the same.
The rally concluded with a public meeting which was
addressed in English, Konkani and Kannada by Zarine
Chinvala, Director Arz, Podyappa Chalwadi, President-Youth
Wing of the Campaign Against Child Prostitution and Yelappa
Harijan, member of the Campaign Against Child Prostitution.
The speakers elaborated on the heinousness of the crime of
child prostitution and appealed for support in stopping
trafficking of children and all ongoing trial cases against
traffickers of minors, such as the Taravva Case. Later
pamphlets and a display of posters and banners was held at
the Panaji KTC bus stand.
