Those of us of Indian origin and Goans in particular have to learn the
meaning of 'Enough is Enough' and not beat their drums to the same rythm.
They become boring and intollerable and I can understand the feelings of
Santosh and Samir and many others who cherish the fact (after having spilt
blood) that we have our own language recognised by the Government of India.
No one should be forced to study Konkani and if they choose to learn and
speak Marathi, so be it. Marathi speaking Goans should note that they make
life for themselves more difficult if they persist in not knowing Konkani.
There are a host of languages that are akin to each other without
controversy. The Spaniards can claim that Portuguese is a root of Spanish and
it is so. But after centuries of development and use, it has become a
language in its own right. Similarly, Dutch, Swiss German, Austrian and even
the language of Alsace Lorraine and the Saarland are derived from the German
Sprache. So what, there is no controversy in Europe over their identities. So
why in India and in Goa in particular should someone like Jaisinghrao Rane,
whose ancestors were given shelter in Goa and who helped the Portuguese Army
dominate Indians and Africans (The Rane's served in the Portuguese Army in
Africa) attempt to make such a ridiculous statement? We in Goa are happy to
live with Konkani and no one is forced to learn it. Those who maintain that
we should accept the predominant position of Marathi should just step over
the border to live where they are comfortable.
Well said Santosh and I do hope that you have found a cure for AIDS.

By Eugene Correia
Tears were streaming from the eyes of many viewers
when the lights came on at the end of the world
premiere of Mother Teresa: The Legacy, a 55-minute
long documentary, at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre,
Canadian Exhibition Place (CNE), on July 24.
The Petrie sisters, Ann and Jeanette, who produced and
directed the documentary, received a standing ovation
for the portrayal of the last days of the Nobel Prize
winner who dedicated her life to the "poorest of the
poor" in Kolkatta, and the footage of her state
funeral.
Present among the 1,300 invitees at the screening were
Aline Chretien, wife of Prime Minister Jean Chretien,
who represented Canada at the Mother's funeral.
Seating next to Mrs. Chretien was India's Acting High
Commissioner Parbati Sen Vyas.
At least 20 nuns belonging to the Missionaries of
Charity, the order founded by Mother Teresa, sat in
the auditorium along with many priests.
At least 15,000 participants at the World Youth Day
saw the documentary projected on giant screen at
Centennial Park in the CNE.
Winner of numerous international awards, including two
Emmy Awards, for their earlier film called Mother
Teresa , which premiered at the United Nations in 1985
and was broadcast in more than 60 countries, the
producers let Mother Teresa do most of the talking in
the film.
The theme of the screening event was "Works of Love
are Works of Peace", one of Mother Teresa's famous
expressions.
Speaking in monologues, the Mother explains why she in
engaged in the service of the poor and offers sane
advice on reducing the suffering of those less
fortunate.
She opens up her heart and her soul as images of her
carrying sick infant children or holding the old and
the dying in her arms flash on the screen.
The film shows black-and-white photos of Mother
Teresa's as a child and later when she became a nun.
The funeral is very well captured and makes a lasting
impression on the mind. The images of Mother Teresa
lying in state, people in long line-ups to pay their
last respects and the crying and sobbing of people
from all walks of life in Kolkatta, are arresting.
In an interview, Jeanette Petrie said she and her
sister wanted to do this film because of the immense
response they had received for their earlier work.
"We got exclusive permission from the sisters to shoot
the funeral. We wanted to use this format as we wanted
Mother to speak for herself on her spirituality that
brought together Hindus, Muslims and people of other
faiths." Jeanette explained at the end of the
screening.
She said that Mother had let them know that they
should not "add or subtract" anything. "We wanted to
let the people know what happens behind the scenes.
Mother Teresa had tremendous influence on my life,"
she added.
The documentary is likely to be shown on some TV
stations, but no dates were available.

Resistance building up against hotel project.
- ----------------------------------------------------------
As a five-star resort company's project for a world-class recreation park
on the Sinquerim hill makes progress, the residents of Candolim
are building up resistance to it.
The director of tourism, Mr Suryanarayana confirmed that the lease agreement
between the Goa government and Indian Resort Hotels company for a
recreation park
in about 3 lakh sq mt of land on the hill has already been signed.
The lease is for 50 years, renewable for another 49 years.
Mr Suryanarayana said once the park becomes operational,
the company will pay the state government a fee of Rs 1 crore annually.
The resort company has already obtained permission for the project
from the Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA)
which has made its approval conditional on as many as eight grounds.
According to the conditions, all the provisions of the coastal regulation zone
must be strictly followed by the company; the approval of the concerned
town and country planning office and village panchayat must be obtained
before starting construction work; the park must be open to the general
public;
the common recreational facilities should be priced at rates affordable
by ordinary citizens; all native tree species, including the natural
vegetation
of the Sinquerim plateau, must be preserved to the maximum extent possible;
no constructions/structures would be permissible within the coastal
regulation zone
abutting the bank of river Mandovi; and the traditional public accesses,
including accesses, to the Aguada Fort should not be blocked.
The Candolim panchayat has unanimously rejected the application
of the resort company to set up the recreational park. Yet the panchayat
officials
say that if other authorities give their approval to the project, the
panchayat
will also be forced to approve it. However, the sarpanch, Mr Agnelo Fernandes
wants the residents to give their opinion as soon as possible to the panchayat
about whether they are for granting approval to the project in case approvals
are granted by other authorities.
A local group called Candolim Residents and Consumer Forum (CRCF) wants
the approval granted to the project by Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority
(GCZMA) be revoked. The forum argues that the Sinquerim plateau falls in CRZ-I
in which no construction activity can be permitted. In support, they cite the
coastal regulation zone notification of September 1996. Among other things,
the notification puts areas that are ecologically sensitive and important
and areas
of outstanding natural beauty/historically/heritage in the category of CRZ-I.
The forum says that the entire belt has been defaced with concrete.
Its drinking water wells have become polluted and the Sinquerim hill
is the last natural preserve of the village that remains untouched.
Mr Sanjay Sethi, general manager of Taj Holiday Village, Sinquerim,
which belongs to the Indian Resort Hotels, expressed inability comment
on the project. He said he had been posted to Goa very recently and that
the recreation park project was being handled directly by the corporate office.
The forum fears that the pristine beauty of the Sinquerim hill will disappear
with commercialisation. Offering a panoramic view of the Arabian Sea,
Panaji city
and the Sinquerim-Calangute beach, the hill also houses the 300-year old
St Lawrence church, the historic Aguada fort and the lighthouse
