Making Watery Promises.
-----------------------------------------
Our politicians promised us mirages of clean plentiful water and destroyed
the sustainable method of water harvesting (using traditional wells) and
kept the villages parched. Many have to make do with inadequate one-hour
water supplies for large parts of the year. Especially in areas of coastal
Bardez.
In villages like Sangolda, Saligao, Nerul, Taleigao, and Guirim, an army
of water tankers ply each day, sucking out the groundwater and selling it
to the tourism belt at a throwaway price. Goa legislators have enacted
a Groundwater Act, but this is yet to be implemented.
Now we are informed that rules for the same are being framed.
We are keeping a vigilant watch to ensure that this does not become
another attempt in perpetuating injustice on the average villager.
We hope this illegalities will be stopped by tenants who were given fields
supposedly to enhance the agricultural crops in the area.
The power is also supplied for agricultural uses, and is being misused
by the water mafia.
