ISHAPREMA-NIKETAN has been actively involved in the
lives of the "Women of Goa".
ISHAPREMA-NIKETAN
Ishaprema-Niketan ("Home of God's Love") was opened on
19th March 1961 in a little garage situated in Padamji
Park, Pune (Maharashtra State, India).
Run by dedicated Sisters of the Group called
Ishaprema-Vinamra-Sevika (The Little Servants of God's
Love), the Home cares for abandoned, lonely, destitute
old men and women, handicapped girls, and little ones
of working mothers of the slums around.
The Sisters have been helping also, to the best of
their ability, destitute individuals or families
especially in their housing, medical or social needs.
And, besides the help given to educate several
destitute children in other boarding schools, some 200
school-going children from the slums are being
strengthened by the Sisters with a noon-day meal
thrice in the week.
The moving spirit behind all these services is to
build a real family without distinction of sex, caste,
creed or religion. In this atmosphere of real personal
concern each one is to experience that God, the Father
of us all, truly loves each person with a very
personal concern, even in the midst of apparent human
loneliness, neglect or abandonment, and physical or
mental suffering.
In order to precisely reveal this divine love to all
those we care for, right from the start it has been a
fixed distinctive norm of the Home never to take any
fees from the inmates, but to maintain itself and
develop its services only through voluntary donations
of rich or poor persons from near or far. In this way
our Donors are the instruments of God Himself. They
are sharers in His Fatherly Providence and the visible
sign of His Motherly Caring Love towards these poorer
children of His.
And for the last 40 years God has never failed His
Ishaprema-Niketan through the generosity of persons
coming from all strata of society, linguistic groups
or religious affiliation, from India and abroad.
Gifts have been coming in kind or in cash not only to
the Home in Pune - no more our garage where
Ishaprema-Niketan was born, but a larger bungalow very
close to it - , but to the two Branches that were
opened in the State of Goa (one at Assaganv, Bardez
Taluka, in 1966, and the other at Goa-Velha, near
Pilar, Tiswadi Taluka, in 1972).
These houses themselves with the surrounding property
are a gift. And everything in these our Homes - all
bearing the same name - is donated: every needed
facility like cots, mattresses and bed-linen, home
furniture, electrical and plumbing fittings, fans,
fridges, washing machines, geysers and TV sets ...
People have seen that these amenities are necessary to
make those we serve feel truly at home, lovingly cared
for. And they (our resident inmates alone) are now in
Pune on an average around 55-70, while in the two Goa
Homes they number about 40.
We are deeply grateful for the countless gifts in cash
and kind we have been receiving through the years,
besides much encouragement from various people:
without all this and God's very visible protection we
would never have been able to carry on our service of
dedication in the midst of many hardships and
obstacles of various types.
Still, we have to make our requirements in cash and
kind known. In Pune alone, we need for ordinary
running expenses some 60 to 70 thousand Indian Rupees
(about US $ 2820-3190) per month. In Goa about 20
thousand Rupees (about US $ 940) per month. That is
why we always remain with our hands extended in appeal
to the generosity of our sisters and brothers, and
with our hearts raised to God above in supplication
and thanksgiving. Yes, together with the Sisters, all
those cared for by us pray for those who in various
ways sustain this service of love.
May God's love and peace fill the hearts of all and
may He help us build a true human family of mutual
love, caring and concern, especially towards those who
are physically, mentally or socially more disfavoured
among us.
Our Ishaprema-Niketan in Pune is run by the
Ishaprema-Niketan-Sangh (Pune), registered under the
Societies' Registration Act of 1860 and under the
Bombay Public Trust Act of 1950. Our Homes in Goa are
run by the Ishaprema-Niketan-Sangh (Goa), registered
under the Societies' Registration Act of 1860. Both
have exemption of tax for donors under Section 80 G of
the Indian Income-Tax Act.
