BOILER BLAST KILLS 5: In a powerful blast of a boiler in a factory at
Marcaim industrial estate at around 11 pm, five workers were killed and 12
others injured, including seven seriously, on Monday. The explosion in 21st
Century, a factory manufacturing iron rods, occurred after the labourers
who were on duty had put scrap material into the boiler for melting. (GT)
PLANNING BOARD RECONSTITUTED: The Goa government has reconstituted the
Planning Board of Goa with Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar as the chairman
and Saligao MLA Dr Wilfred de Souza as the deputy chairman. (GT)
EDITORS CALL ON GOVERNOR: A six-member team of Goa Editors Guild paid a
courtesy call on the Governor, Mr Kidar Nath Sahani, at Raj Bhavan
yesterday. The editors included Chandrakant Keni, Rajan Narayan, Shard
Karkanis, Suresh Walve, Arun Sinha and Pramod Khandeparkar. (NT)
PRIVATISATION OF FERRY ROUTES: In order to minimize the huge losses
suffered by the River Navigation Department, the State government has now
decided to hand over 11 ferry routes to private parties for ticket
collection from 1 November this year. The routes are Ribandar-Chorao,
Panaji-Betim, Sao Pedro-Diwar, Naroa-Diwar, Old Goa-Divar, Pomburpa-Chorao,
Amona-Khandola, Madkai-Cortalim, Raia-Shiroda and two other routes. (GT)
HOUSES BURGLED IN CUNCOLIM: Unknown culprits burgled two ancestral houses
belonging to Sandeep Vaidya and his uncle Prabhakar Vaidya, both residents
of Madicotto in Cuncolim when the occupants were away. (H)
MIGRANTs EYEING PLOTS: The housing scheme under the 20-point programme
might have been in the dumps for more than a year now but migrants are
hoping against hope to acquire the much-sought-after plots of government
land. Around 300-odd applicationsmostly from outsidersare pending in the
Salcete Mamlatdar's office for want of plots. (H)
"MANDREM, A MODEL PANCHAYAT": In the first ever "Meet the Press" programme
organised by the Mandrem Gram Panchayat, Sarpanch Vishwanath P Shirodkar
said, "Mandrem panchayat, one of the largest panchayats in Pernem, with a
population of over 14,000, is a model for other panchayats. The panchayat
has developed Mandrem into a model village will all modern facilities. (GT)
TANUJA MURDER CASE: The Congress Legislature Party, which met at the State
Assembly complex yesterday, took strong note of the police department's
failure in cracking the Tanuja murder case, and warned the government to
act before any distasteful situation arose over the murder case. (NT)
WATER SHORTAGE IN CAVREM-PIRLA: Inspite of its rich natural water
resources, Cavrem-Pirla Panchayat, 7 km from Quepem, faces water shortage
during the summer. (GT)
ANMOD ROAD: a 25-kilometre stretch of the road between Anmod and Ramnagar,
which is frequently used by Goans, is totally in bad shape and requires
urgent repairs, Curchorem Block Youth Congress Committee president Paul
Carvalho has pointed out in a letter addressed to the Chief Minister of

ELECTED BY LOTS: When Ujwala Tirodkar resigned as chairperson of the Pernem
Municipal Council on October 11, only to re-contest elections to the post
on Tuesday, little did Tirodkar realise that luck would help her return to
power for the second time in the month. Tirodkar was elected chairperson in
a draw of lots. (GT)
ARRESTED FOR MOLESTATION: A Punjabi reported to be a handball player was
arrested by Margao police for allegedly outraging the modesty of a girl
while traveling in a bus from Colva to Margao. He was released on a bail of
Rs.10,000 with one local surety. (H)
BOMB TO PERFORM AT NAVELIM: Bob Fitts, who leads millions of Christians in
praise and worship through live concerts, recordings and worship songs,
will be performing on November 6, at Rosary Football ground, Navelim from 6
pm. (H)
PRU SLIVER AWARD: Shivranjani Securities Co Pvt Ltd, a Salgaocar group
company, received the Pru chairman sliver Award for the second best
performance in distribution of Prudential ICICI Mutual Funds in the regions
comprising of Ludhiana, Goa, Coimbatore, Kochi, Mangalore, Vizag,
Thiruvandapuram, Surat and Durgapur. (H)
A GOAN AT NIAGARA WALK: Tim D'Mello (of Goanet and Goacom) successfully
completed the Casino-Niagara Marathon Walk of 42 Km (26 miles) on October
27. That Tim, probably the only Goan and Indian participating in the walk,
finished 66th out of 86 hardly matters since there were merely two
competitors of his retired/age group. He took just over 6 hr and 53 min,
averaging about 15 min per mile. The "marathon man" trained for the events
for nearly 28 weeks, as one of his activities during retirement. (GoaNOW)

SOCCER PROGRAMME AT DIVAR: A unique football initiative is being launched
by Goa's first-ever Sports Activists of Divar. Initially they will work
under the banner of Divar Sporting team. All the youth of Divar, over the
age of six years, will get a chance to be trained by professional coaches
