It is high time to review the way our Governors in India are appointed. Today when peoples trust and faith in politicians is very low, it is imperative that we have non-partisan Governors of the highest repute to safeguard the interest of the common man when the politicians slip. Governors cost the taxpayer a very sizeable chunk and cash-strapped India cannot afford to support and encourage rubber stamp Governors who hesitate to perform duties as enshrined upon them by the Indian Constitution. On Feb 27th 2002, former Governor Mohammed Fazal's decision to hastily and recklessly dissolve the Goa Assembly showed how partisan a Governor could be. His spontaneous and thoughtless decision cost the Goa taxpayers a whopping expenditure by way of another election to replace a fractured mandate which by the Goenkar's wisdom produced yet another fractured and ruptured verdict. Goans should be relieved that Fazal is gone. But it is disappointing that another BJP crony has replaced him, this time an official RSS member, Kidar Nath Sahani. It is time that Governors play a vibrant role in contributing ideas and vision to cure India's ills. A Governor's post should not be a retirement gift to a party loyalist at taxpayer's expense. The taxpayer should not be burdened to satisfy the Governor's whims and desires. There should be consensus within all parties that people with skills and administrative acumen be posted as Governors. Healthy and non-senile retired Judges or senior officers of the various Administrative Services should be considered to do justice to the Governor's role. Goans have had the fortune of being well served by a few Governors. Not very long ago Gen Jacob proved that Goa could be administered sans political hindrance. He was replaced by a very partial Governor Fazal who will soon prove his partisan links in Maharashtra. Being a RSS member is no sin but a RSS being a Governor and that too in an otherwise secular State like Goa, is uncalled for. On 26th January,the Republic day, Governor Sahani will take the salute at Campal Grounds. Will he be in Khaki shorts and the white tops of the so communal organisation he has been at the forefront of? We have over this Diwali celebration witnessed the mythical slaying of a record number of "Narakarsur's". The only one Narakasur that has survived is Manohar Parrikar who has tragically been creating damage to the otherwise harmonious secular Goa by the day.
