GOA DECKED UP FOR DIWALI: Diwali, the festival of lights, symbolizing the victory of good over evil, is being celebrated throughout the State with traditional gaiety and religious fervour, amidst the bursting of fire crackers. Colourful diyas and lights, candles and aakashkandils adorned the houses, which wore a festive look since Sunday late evening. The effigies of demon Narkasur were burnt at midnight to usher in Diwali. (GT)

ARCHBISHOP'S DIWALI GREETINGS: On the occasion of Diwali, the Catholic Community in Goa led by Archbishop Raul Gonsalves, has conveyed its cordial greeting to all the Hindu people, in a press note issued by the Diocesan Centre for Social Communications Media.

DIWALI SPIRIT: The spirit of Diwali has not dampened even though the prices of sweets, fruits and other materials have increased by 15 to 20 per cent compared to last year's prices and there was a heavy crowd gathered at sweetmeat shops in Panjim busy in making last minute purchases yesterday. CHORAO, CUMBHARJUA TO BE LINKED WITH MAINLAND: Chorao and Cumbharjua islands will no more lag behind in the development process as the two islands will soon be linked with the mainland. Stating this, the Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar, disclosed that two bridges, one at Gaundale and the other at Chorao, are being taken up soon to boost the development in the island areas. (H)

AUDITORS RAP COLVA PANCHAYAT: The annual account prepared by the Colva panchayat does not give a true and correct picture of the state of affairs of accounts, observed auditors in their report for the year 2000-2001. (GT)

LINUX FOUNDER TO VISIT GOA: Dr Richard M Stallman, the controversial founder of the free Software Foundation, is a brilliant coder and MacArthur "genius grant" recipient, who single-handedly launched the movement that threatens to beat Microsoft by radically changing the rules of the software game. Dr Stallman will be visiting Goa from November 5 to 7. On November 6, he will speak at the Goa College of Engineering in Farmagudi. (NT)

YOUTH DIES IN MISHAP: Sudip, a 25-year-old fast food stall owners from Mapusa, died on the spot after the motorcycle he was riding skidded off the road at Tar Bridge, in Mapusa, on November 2 night. Sudip was returning from Bastora where he had gone to buy bread from a bakery at about about 1.15 am along with his friend Viraj Jhinde, who is lying at the GMC with serious injuries. (H)

ONE KILLED IN PETTY FEUD: A petty quarrel over Rs.20 led to the murder of a 4-year-old migrant labourer at Porvorim on Saturday night. (GT)

PANCHAYAT SALARIES HEARING: Panchayats Minister Manohar Azgaonkar has fixed 12 November for hearing of objection raised by the Marcaim Rashtrahita Manch to the grant of salaries and allowances to members of Zilla Parishad and Village Panchayats. (GT)

AQUEM CHAPEL NOW A CHURCH: Archbishop Raul Gonsalves yesterday decreed an elevated Pandava chapel to church dedicated to St Sebastian. The chapel was earlier affiliated to Our Lady of Rosary Church at Navelim, and henceforth it stands as a new parish of Aquem Alto, and will form a part of the Deanery of Margao. (GT)

SHOP ROBBED: The police were given a rude shock at Curchorem on Saturday night when burglars broke into the shop of T Parab and Sons, by breaking open the steel shutter, merely 10 metres away from the police station. (GT)

INFANT ABANDONED AT GMC: A three-day old baby was found abandoned near the water tank in the Goa Medical College premises at Bambolim, on Saturday night. (H)

EX-GOMANTAK EDITOR FETED: Former Gomantak editor Madhav Gadkari was felicitated yesterday by the Konkan Marathi Sahitya Parishad, Gomantak Sahitya Sevak Mandal, Gomantak Marathi Akademi and the Samraat Club of Panaji, at a function held at the Institute Menezes Braganza Hall, in Panaji, on the occasion of his completion of 75 years. WORLD TRAVEL AWARD: The Leela Palace, Goa, has won, for the third consecutive year, the World Travel Award as the leading Resort in the Asia-Pacific Region, at Sandals Grande St Lucian Spa & Beach Resort in St Lucia. (GT)

GALLERIA LANCER, an art gallery, owned by Vasco-based industrialist Pankaj Joshi, was inaugurated at Auto Service in Vasco on Friday evening. "This is a unique concept of an art gallery in car showroom. We intend to promote art along with the products," said Joshi. (H)

GOA DAY IN KUWAIT: The Goan Welfare Society, Kuwait, in association with other Goan clubs, celebrated the 7th annual Goa Day recently at the Indian Arts Circle Auditorium, Funaitees-Kuwait. A number of educational awards to meritorious Goan students for excelling in their respective classes at the CBSC Board as well as school examinations, were presented. (GT)

SANDRA SELECTED: Sandra de Menezes Velho, MA student of French, Goa University, has been selected for an assistantship in English by the Lycee de Valbonne, NICE, France, to teach English to French speaking students for the academic year 2002-03. (H)
