Milk consumers complain of less quantity in packets
--------------------------------------------------------------------
A large number of Porvorim-based milk consumers buying milk packets
from Goa Milk Produce Union (GMPU), Curti, Ponda have complained
about reduction in the amount of milk sold to them.

"The half litre milk packets bought by me on November 28 contained milk
weighing only 350 ml," informed a resident of Vijaynagar - Porvorim,
who later approached the Department of Weights and Measures.
The milk packets displayed a stamp mark signifying the date of packing
as November 28, 2002.

The packets were weighed in the presence of the director of the department,
who found that the milk packets were lighter by 150 ml. A team of officers
from the department later left for Curti along with the measuring instruments.

Meanwhile, an official from the Department of Weights and Measures
informed that the electronic fillers at the GMPU dairy used for filling
milk packets are regularly checked by the officers of the department.

However, the dairy is informed in advance about the check, he mentioned.
The official also stressed on the need to conduct surprise checks at the dairy.
He further observed that the department is also involved in conducting checks
of gas cylinders, cold drink bottling plants and ghee packing units,
among other products.

The residents of Porvorim, who frequently do not get the worth for their money,
as far as buying of milk from GMPU is concerned, have suggested that the
department should check the milk packets at the milk booth itself,
before selling them to the customers.
