CONGRESS FLAYS POLICE ACTION: The Congress Legislative Party yesterday
charged that the government was misusing the police machinery to take over
most of the public institutions in the State. CLP spokesman and MLA
Jitendra Deshprabhu said that the CLP deplored the police action in the Goa
Cricket Association affairs and came to the conclusion that the government
was more interested in GCA than most of the burning issues concerning the

ARRESTED AT CAPXEM JETTY: The Curchorem police arrested 23 persons
including nine women for obstructing the ore loading at Capxem jetty
yesterday. Police informed that EMCO company has given the loading contract
to the local people, who are affected by dust pollution. (GT)
IN SAO MATHIAS: Trouble brewing in Sao Mathias (Divar) panchayat for a long
time reached its boiling point on Thursday, when the deputy sarpanch and
two of its five members served a notice of no confidence against Sarpanch
Anil Sawant. (H)
BETALBATIM PANCHAYAT SECY: The issue over the absence of a full-fledged
panchayat secretary took the centre stage at Betalbatim village gram sabha
meeting with the members demanding action at the earliest. (H)
GOVT TO RE-SURVEY LAND IN GOA: After much delay, the re-survey of land in
Goa is to begin from February 2003. The survey, estimated to cost Rs.10
crore, will be conducted with electronic gadgets in digital forms, through
Global Positioning System and Total Stations. It will cover even
underground cables and pipelines besides the ground structures. Hitherto,
the maps of '70s have hardly been updated. (H)
STUDENTS HAIL BBA COURSE: The newly commenced Bachelor of Business
Administration (BBA) course of Goa University in three colleges within the
State has been received well by students and industry. The first batch of
90 students of the three-year degree course being taught at SV's College of
Commerce and Management Studies, Khorlim, Rosary College, Navelim, and MES
College, Zuarinagar-Vasco, is scheduled to pass out in June 2003. (GT)
LAW MINISTER RE-NOMINATED: Law Minister and Mapusa MLA Francis D'Souza has
been provided a second stint as chairman of the prestigious North Goa
Planning and Development Authority. (H)
IN TWO COURTS AT SAME TIME: Petitioner Advocate JP D'Souza, who argued in
the High Court on December 10, claimed that Additional Advocate General
Vilas Thali had cheated the State exchequer by presenting false bills of
bogus appearances in the apex court as well as the Bombay High Court at Goa

COUNTERMANDING CASE: The Judicial Magistrate First Class, Margao, dismissed
an application moved by a prosecution witness Nima Almeida e Gracias in
connection with the infamous countermanding of elections case reported in

TO PAY FOR MICKKY'S BIRTHDAY: Congress Legislature Party spokesman
Jeetendra Deshprabhu on Tuesday has deplored the attempt to induce
contributions from all members of Travel and Tourism Association of Goa,
towards the birthday expenses of Tourism Minister Mickky Pacheco. (H)

MIRACULOUS ESCAPE FOR KIDS: Six kindergarten kids from Mapusa had a
miraculous escape on Tuesday afternoon, after their rickshaw ferrying them
to school rammed into a roadside tree at Khorlim, following a brake
failure. The toddlers escaped with minor injuries, while the rickshaw
driver Manohar Harmalkar suffered serious injuries. (H)
SONSODDO ISSUE: Margao Seva Association has demanded dissolution of the
Margao Municipal Council for their failure to solve the Sonsodo garbage

REVIVAL OF KOMEX: Hopes of reviving the abandoned Komex garbage treatment
plant at Sonsodo yard has brightened as an outstation party has evinced

MATKA CAMPAIGN: The Goa police recovered over Rs.3.75 lakh by booking a
total of 1151 matka gambling cases during the last 40 days in the State.
Also 1206 persons were arrested during the campaign. (GT)
UNDERSTANDING OF CULTURES: Contemporary Portuguese writers, Urbano Tavares
Rodrigues and Clara Pinto Correia, said that there was a need to translate
works from Indian languages into Portuguese and vice-versa in order to
develop a better understanding between the cultures of the two lands, as
well as help know the writers of both countries. They were talking at an
interactive literary session at Fundacao Oriente on Monday. (NT)
SCIENCE OF SOUND: Shruti Poddar of Shri Aurobindo Ashram, who is trained in
Vedic chants, will give a demonstration on the science of sound at Narcinva
Damodar Hall in Margao at 6.30 pm today. Poddar has made clinical
experiments on the effect of Vedic chants and AUM on brain waves. (GT)
BULLET TRAIN TRIAL: The trial run of the proposed "bullet train" will
commence from December 15 on the Konkan Railway tracks between Margao and
Roha in Maharashtra. The train, which is expected to run at a speed of 160
KmpH, will undergo trials for several days, monitored by the KR officials.
It is generally expected that after the commissioning of the bullet train,
the journey between Mumbai and Margao is expected to be covered in around 4

Square Garden, Panjim. Daniel won 16 prizes in different categories at the
Utsav held by the Botanical Society of Goa in collaboration with the Panjim
municipal Council and the Department of Science, Technical and Environment,
