MAJOR DRUG HAUL AT CHAPORA: The Anjuna Police on December 12 afternoon
raided a rented premises at Bondir Vaddo at Chapora and recovered 1,822
grammes of charas from Stephan Morro, a 32-year-old Italian tourist. The
contraband, worth about Rs.10 lakh in the international market, was sealed
in a sleeping mat. (H)
BOY COMMITS SUICIDE: An 18-year-old boy, Jerry Fernandes, from
Pockvaddo-Betalbatim allegedly committed suicide on Thursday by hanging
himself in a business establishment of his father in Margao, as he
reportedly failed to clear the SSC examination three counts. (H):
DEPT RENAMED: The State government has renamed the Department of Civil
Supplies and Price Control, Panaji, as the Department of Civil Supplies and
Consumer Affairs by an order issued on December 9, 2002, in view of its
broader functions pertaining to consumer rights and on lines with the
Central government. (GT)
VELIM, BETUL LOCALS TO AGITATE: There seems to be not let up in accidents
on the Velim roads due to spillage of fish water (by transport vehicles),
forcing the locals to virtually serve an ultimatum on the authorities to
stop the menace or face agitation. (H)
REDUCTION IN TILLARI SHARE: The State government has decided in principle
to go ahead with the Tillari Irrigation Project provided Goa's share is
reduced from the present 77 per cent to about 48 to 50 per cent. Though
initially the Tillari water was expected to irrigate about 17,000 hectares
of land, the present analysis indicates that only about 10,000 to 11,000
hectares of land will be irrigated. The share of the State government
correspondingly falls to about Rs.500 crore, of which the Goa government
has already paid Rs.330 crore. (GT)
TO EVACUATE ENCROACHERS: Officials at the Mormugao Mamlatdar's office are
reportedly working overtime to draw up an action plan to evacuate over 300
families who have illegally encroached upon the naphtha pipeline from
Mormugao Harbour to Kattem-Baina in Vasco. (H)
CABINET MEET: A financial assistance of Rs.10 crore to the Mapusa Urban
Co-operative Bank of Goa Limited, creation of 1000 jobs, finalization of
the fixation of pay of group "D" employees with 40 per cent fitment
weightage and granting 30 information kiosks, are likely to be approved at
the Cabinet meeting slated at 2.30 pm today. (GT)
ARRESTED FOR STARVING ANIMALS: Colva police arrested one Aslam Bepari of
Khareband-Margao for allegedly starving animals. About 35 animals were seen
tied on a hillock, starving for food and water, for the purpose of
illegally slaughtering them. (H)
GCA SCAM: The Panaji police investigating into the misappropriation of Goa
Cricket Association accounts have found that in all 20 self-cheques were
encashed from the Bank account while there were no details of fixed
deposits of Rs.2 lakh. (GT)
MISSILE BOAT COMMISSIONING: "INS Pralaya", the second ship of the Prabal
Class, built by Goa Shipyard Ltd indigenously, will be commissioned into
the Indian Navy on 18 December by Governor Kidar Nath Sahani. (GT)
SC REJECTS SLP: The Supreme Court of India has dismissed a special leave
petition challenging the High Court Order of upholding the appointment of
Mr Avinash Vaze as the chairman of the Goa Public Service Commission. (NT)
SPECIAL BENEFITS FOR SENIOR CITIZENS: Senior citizens in the country are
likely to get special benefitsthanks to the Prime Minister's and Finance
Minister's gesture to have a special package in the coming budget to give
them higher interest rates. Goa had forwarded an appeal to explain the
woes, tragedies and difficulties faced by the senior citizens since the
interest rates have fallen. (GT)
BRITISHER'S RAPE CASE: The Additional Sessions Court acquitted five accused
of being involved in the rape of a Britisher at Calangute, on the grounds
that there was absolutely no evidence against them. In addition, the victim
is no longer alive, and so cannot testify against them. (H)
WORK AT GOMANTESHWAR: Officials from the department of archaeology and
archives will visit the Gomanteshwar temple at Brahmapuri, Old Goa, a
protected heritage site, where "restoration" work is going on at the
instance of the temple committee since last week. (NT)
FIGHT AGAINST PRIVATISATION: The 12 th Conference of All India Federation
of Electricity Employees concluded recently with a clarion call given to
all its members to fight with all their might against the Central
government's policy of privatizing all the public sector units. (H)
MANGALORE TRAIN: For the benefit of the passengers traveling from Mangalore
and coastal Karnataka to Verna and Panaji, the KRI/KR2, Mangalore-Madgaon
passenger train has been extended till the Verna station. (GT)
CURTORIM HILL "LEVELLING" CASE: Investigations by the Maina-Curtorim police
have revealed that the property in which the unauthorized leveling of a
huge portion of a hill was reported at Curtorim last month, allegedly
belonged to Bruno Lourenco. (H)

"Excellent Research Award" in the 4 th Shanghai International Symposium on
clinical acupuncture and academic research, last month. Dr Prabhu has also

HELPING THE DEAD: When the mortal coil is shuffled and the luxury of large
homes and big cars can be had no more, Thomas D'Souza, a 45-year-old Mapusa
undertaker, provides the comfortable casket that takes man on his final
journey to God's acre. "I am very happy with my work. I am helping the
dead. Often I personally pick up the bodies from the mortuary, dress them
up and arrange everything else. This is more than a job to me," he says.
