MARINE POLICE LAUNCHED: The Marine Police force, which will keep a vigil on the Goan coast and internal waterways was inaugurated on December 16. Four boats required for patrolling duties have already been purchased by the department. SDPO Mapusa, Allen D'Sa, will be the overall incharge of the Marine Police. (GT)

GOA COST SOFT FOR ARMS' LANDING: The Goa Police does not deny the fact that Goa's 105-km coastline could be a soft target for landing of arms, ammunition, explosives and narcotics by Pakistan's ISI. This in fact is one of the major justifications put forth by the cops for setting up the Police Marine Force. (H)

BATTLE AGAINST SOUND: Environmentalists have urged the government to notify a list of 15 days during the calendar year in which the use of loud speakers during night hours would be allowed beyond 10 pm upto midnight. Fearing that the government may allow the misuse of a recent relaxation in the Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rules 2000, some NGOs are gearing up to file a petition in the courts of law to seek a directive to the State in this regard. COMPUTER BONANZA FOR STUDENTS: Nearly 300 XI Std Science Students will receive computers per week from December 19 after the government officially launches the Cyberage Students Scheme on the 41 st anniversary of Goa's Liberation. (H)

BRAKES ON JET-SPEED SINGER: William de Curtorim, who claims to have sung "political songs" for thee decades, had to omit two such songs at a show of his latest tiatr ("Nirmonn Devachem") offering at Mapusa on December 15. While the show was scheduled to be held at at 10.30 am, he was taken in a jeep by the police to the police station nearby and told not to sing "political" songs at this tiatr. (GT)

CRICKET GROUND TURNS BATTLEFIELD: It was an usual cricket match on Sunday for the youngsters at the Rajendra Prasad stadium in Margao before it took the shape of a battle field with the players of rival teams assaulting each other with bats and stumps. A player sustained shoulder injury and was referred to the Hospicio and later shifted to the GMC. (NT)

A MUSLIM SETTLEMENT IN MANDREM? Residents here (Alkhannem, a small hamlet in Mandrem), say that their ancestors had told them that it was a Muslim settlement in the past. MEMBERS FLAY SARPANCH'S STATEMENT: Three member of village panchayat of Parra --Benedict D'Souza, Jerome Nogueira and Elsy Lobohave--reacted sharply to the press statement made by the sarpanch over the construction coming up in the triangular area reserved for a traffic island at the Parra-Saligao junction. The three have reiterated that there is gross violation of the Goa Panchayati Raj in allowing a construction come up in the area. (H)

HUTS GUTTED: A raging fire gutted four pucca huts on December 16 near Nalanda Apartments, at Shanti-nagar-Rawanfond, causing an estimated loss of over Rs.one lakh. (H)

MAN BURNS TO DEATH ON BED: Anton Fernandes (50) from Gandaulim-Colva was found burnt dead on his bed in his house on December 16 morning. Police said the deceased was reportedly getting fits and it could be during such time that the cigarette he was smoking fell on the bed to catch fire. (H)

"LIBERATION UTSAV": A people's version of Goa Liberation day will be organised by various groups at Azad Maidan on 19 December. The "Liberation Utsav" will bring together, at the initiative of World Social Forum (Goa), citizens' groups, trade unions, NGOs, cultural troupes and social activists. The festival is a run-up to the main World Social Forum 5-day Conference to be held at Hyderabad early next year, according to Dr Claude Alvares and Christopher Fonseca, who spoke at a joint press conference. CHILDREN SUSTAIN INJURIES: Eight school children escaped with minor injuries in a road mishap near the railway bridge at Old Goa, when a minibus, which was hired to carry school children to Campal for Goa Liberation Day rehearsal parade, rammed into bus while over speeding. (NT)

OSMITAI JYOT: According to a press release by Mangaldas Bhat, Co-ordinator, the Osmitai Jyot (Identity Torch), which began on the Independence Day from Valpoi, will conclude on the Goa Liberation Day with a 'Run for Osmitai' programme at Curchorem. The Jyot of the KBM's Goa Yuva Mahotsav was started as part of the Osmitai Vors declared by the Goa Government to mark the 125th birth anniversary of Shennoi Goembab. After travelling many parts of Goa with students and youth participating in it, the Jyot will now reach Curchorem. Hundreds of students, youth, children and even elderly people will run with the Jyot from Char Rasta (near Ravindra Bhavan) at Curchorem at 4.30 pm. TEMPERED PRIZE TAGS: The Controller of Legal Metrology (Weights and Measures), during a surprise check of the stalls at the Kharedi Yatra exhibition on December 14, confiscated packages of consumer items worth Rs.1 lakh with tampered price tags. Stickers mentioning the increased prices were fixed by the traders, in place of the original MRP price tags, and a massive discount was offered on this illegally increased rate. (NT)
