ISRAELI FEAR ATTACK ON GOA BEACHES: Israel has said it feared a possible terror attack in Goa during the New Year's eve celebration in which thousands of Israelis are expected to participate…It is believed that the Israeli decision to convey such concern stems from the recent attacks in Mombassa. About 25,000 Israelis visit India every year and Goa is one of the most favoured destinations for them. The "trance" music parties and "full moon" parties are particularly popular with Israelis. INDIA ASSURES SAFETY TO ALL FOREIGNERS: India today said it had taken note of Israel's concerns over the safety of its citizens, who plan to visit Goa on the New Year eve, saying security agencies all over the country were alert and would thwart any attempt to disturb peace. (UNI report in Herald)

NO NEED TO PANIC: The Travel and Tourism Association of Goa has requested the tourists in Goa not to panic from the reports emanating from Israel about possible terror attack on their tourists on New Year eve as this is probably a routine warning issued in the interest of their citizens. (H)

HOTELIERS WARNED: The Director of Tourism, Mr N Suryanarayana, has warned hoteliers against charging rates higher than those approved by the prescribed authority under Goa Registration Tourist Trade Act, 1982, during the peak tourist season, the Christmas and New Year festivities. (NT)

SALE OF SANJIVANI SUGAR: The Panjim Bench of the Bombay High Court has permitted the financially precarious Sanjivani Sahakari Sakhar Karkhana Ltd to sell the 47,000 bags of "free sale" sugar worth around Rs.5 crore lying in its godown, in the open market. The sugar company had challenged the restriction on free sale sugar imposed by the Union of India by way of the Sugar Control Order 1966. The sugar produced by the factory is of two categoriesLevy sugar (10 per cent) and Free sale sugar (90 per cent). (H)

ROBBED ON TRAIN: Two unknown persons impersonating a police constables cheated a passenger P Venkatraman, a retired head master from Tamil Nadu, of his bag containing cash amounting to Rs.10,500 in the Goa Express train, on the pretext of checking luggage. (GT)

ROBBERY AT MAPUSA: Unknown thieves stole Rs.46,400 worth of clothes from the shop of Shanker Narayan Mandrekar at Ekta Nagar, Mapusa, on the night of December 16. (NT)

A DAY BEFORE LAWYERS' STRIKE: A before lawyers' proposed nationwide strike, the Supreme Court yesterday came down heavily on them saying they have no right to go on strike, call for a boycott of the courts, or even go on a token abstention from court work. (PTI report in NT)

COUNCILLORS WALK OUT: Amidst uproar and a walk out by five Congress-backed councilors, the BJP-ruled Margao Municipal Council yesterday ordered the Chief Officer to conduct inquiry into the remarks made by ex-vice chairperson, Ethel Lobo, to pave way for her disqualification. (H)

CABLE TV PRICE HIKE: The satellite television channel subscribers would be burdened by yet another price hike of Rs.50 in their monthly fees, taking the total rent to Rs.300, with the proposed increase in the subscription rates of the pay channels by the broadcasters from January 1, next year. (NT)

COPS TO PAY FOR LOST PISTOL: The government will reimburse an owner (Augusto T Saude Noronha of Veroda) of a pistol, which had been reported lost at the Cuncolim police station, to the tune of Rs.1.2 lakh. (GT)

NO GOVT ORDER ON DEMOLITION: The Government will not pass any order for demolition of the constructions put up on the land of the Archdiocese of Goa and Daman at Caranzalem until the petition challenging the conversion sanad granted for this land next comes up for hearing in the Panjim Bench of the Bombay High Court. (H)

TRANSPORT DEPT TO GO ON-LINE: The State Government's e-governance programme is to take a major step by introducing registration of vehicles on-line from January 26, 2003. (H)

CITIZENS' WRIT: The galloping pace of the controversial construction coming up at the Parra junction has provoked some public spirited residents from Parra to file a writ petition in Goa Bench of the Bombay High Court, challenging the panchayat for not implementing a gram sabha resolution (proposing a traffic island and a garden at the site) and subsequently "hurriedly" granting licence for construction at the site by "overlooking" the resolution. "RATER" BAGS FIRST PRIZE: The first prize for the best performance in the 28th Tiatr Competition organised by the Kala Academy, was awarded to the tiatr "Rater" staged by Housing Board Youth Association, Vasco. "Sharonaeta" by Dramatic Troup of Ribandar and "Ami Oxech Somptele?" by Merces Club have been selected for second and third prize respectively. (H)

ST AUGUSTINE'S TOWER: The "crutches" on its frame have aroused suspicions in some quarters about its structural stability. But the majestic tower of St Augustine is "safe and sound", according to archaeologists. Though most of the gigantic edifice, comprising the convent and the church and other structures, collapsed one after another around 160 years back, it is no small wonder that the tower, which is an awe-inspiring attraction to tourists and locals alike, still has its pinnacle in the sky. FREEDOM THREATENED: "I have been well known for my singing and my songs which have political satire, Recently, I was threatened with dire consequences if I had to sing songs like "Illegal ghoram" and "Gujaratak faran marle". My latest tiatr Nirmonn Devachem was scheduled at Mapusa at 10.30 am. But at 10 am Inspector Govekar ordered me to report to the police station...told me to stop singing political songs." BODHE'S VIEW OF GOA: An exhibition of the aerial pictures titled "Bird's Eye View of Goa", shot by lensman, Mr Gopal Bodhe, will be inaugurated by the Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar, on Decmber 18 at the Kala Academy. (NT)
