GOVT TO GO AHEAD WITH CORPORATION BILL: The Chief Minister, Manohar Parrikar, on Friday (Dec 20) said that the government would go ahead with its plan to form the Panjim Municipal Corporation. The jurisdiction of the Corporation will be restricted to the present limits of Panjim Municipal Council. Taleigao, however, will be given the status of a village panchayat from January 26, 2003, the chief minister said. (H)

MORE BRIDGES TO SPAN GOAN RIVERS: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar laid the foundation stone for the 41-mt Uguem bridge (Rs.92 crore) across Sanguem river and 120-mt Sanvordem bridge (Rs.7.68 crore) across Zuari river at two different places on December 20. Valshem-Naikinim and Amdem bridge in Sanguem will also be taken up within the next six months. (GT)

GOA, KARNATAKA ASKED FOR DATA: The Goa and Karnataka State governments have been asked to submit the complete data of the use of Mhadei river waters by them to the Central government by 31 March next year. (GT)

HELMET RULE ANGERS M.A.G.: Hints dropped by the police officials on introducing safety helmets has drawn instant reaction from the Motorcycle Action Group, which has urged the government to scrap the fresh move or brace itself for a statewide agitation. MAG convenor, Premanand A Lotlikar, said the two-wheeler riders would stand united to oppose any fresh moves to make the use of helmets mandatory. (H)

HELMET BLUES AGAIN: "We are painfully conscious of the fact that nothing will come of the latest proposal to enforce the wearing of helmets, because the two-wheeler riders' lobby and the politicians will together sabotage it. All that will happen is that a scare will be created for a few days to enable the helmet dealers to dispose of their stocks and it will be back to square one once again." (Edit in GT)

PAYMENT TO GOVT ADVOCATES: The Panjim Bench of the Bombay High Court has directed the State government to frame proper rules and impose strict scrutiny of the bills of government advocates to ensure that squandering of government money does not occur in future. (H)

PLACES FREQUENTED BY ISRAELIS IN GOA: The Goa Police are preparing a crack squad of 125 carbine-totting constables to patrol beaches, rave party sites and other areas frequented by Israelis. (H)

TIGHT SECURITY ON PALOLEM BEACH: Elaborate patrolling along the Palolem beach in Canacona is being undertaken by Canacona police and the CID, in view of media reports of a possible strike by terrorists on Israelis. (H)

RAVE PARTIES: The air at Ozrant beach was thick with the pungent smell of hashish laden smoke. The party was allowed to carry on till 6.30 am yesterday and thousands of foreigners gyrated to the techno beat. (GT)

AL QAEDA CELL IN GOA? While there is no way of ascertaining the real threat (from Al Qaeda), sources led a reporter to a city (Panjim) cyber caf� where at least one computer had video clips of Al Qaeda and Osama Bin laden broadcast by renegade Arab television channel Al Jazeera. (GT)

SOFT TARGETS: The participation of foreigners, especially Israeli nationals in rave parties has raised fears about security risks, especially taking into consideration the fact that the police say away from these parties. (GT)

BAN RAVE PARTIES: The Congress party yesterday alleged that Goa has turned into a safe haven for criminals by an ineffective Bharatiya Janata Party government ruling the State. GPCC president, Ms Nirmala Sawant, while addressing a press conference, said that many illegalities like acid and rave parties, were continuing unabated as they were being operated under government protection. HOUSEWIFE COMMITS SUICIDE: A 23-year-old housewife, Riyana Naregul, committed suicide at her residence at Aquem, Margao, on December 19 evening. (NT)

MINING ACTIVITIES IN BATORA: The South Goa administrator of Comunidade, SM Mangrekar, stated that a show cause notice would be issued to the Attorney of Curtorim Comunidade, Alex Reginaldo Lourenso, for failing to safeguard interest of the Comunidade (and allowing) the devastation of a hill area at Batora in Curtorim village. GOODs GUTTED: Goods worth Rs.45,000 were gutted in a fire which broke out at a house in Nagzar in Ponda on Friday afternoon. (H)

SANCHAYANI OFFICES RAIDED: An offence has been registered against the Directors of Sanchayani Savings and Investments Ltd by the Economic Offences Cell, CID branch, and has raided the Sanchayani branches at Sawantwadi. (NT)

ANJUNA CHURCH MOOTS SPIRITUAL TOURISM: In what seems to be a novel concept, St Michael's Church, Anjuna, is contemplating on organizing retreats, meditations, discourse and other religious activities entitled Spiritual Tourism in the near future. The idea was disclosed on December 20 by Fr Ubaldo Fernandes, SFX, parish priest, at a press briefing while unveiling the programmes scheduled to be held to mark the fourth centenary celebrations of the Church from December 23. The ambitious year-long programme will take off with a Eucharistic celebration and a "prakash yatra" (a torch-lit procession) throughout the parish on December 23. (H)

CELEBRATED WITH A DIFFERENCE: In Benaulim the Goa Liberation Day was celebrated with a difference. Right from tying the flat to hoisting it, the head clerk of Benaulim panchayat, Namdev, did it all by himself. The former Sarpanch, Ms Meena Leitao, was the only other person present on the occasion. As no one turned up on time, Mr Namdev himself sang the National Anthem. (NT)

A NOBLE MAN: City (Panaji) businessman, Govind Manguesh Bharne, affectionately called "Bhau", had given a pair of suits to the jailed last Portuguese governor-general of Goa, General Vassalo e Silva, exactly 41 years ago when he surrendered to the Indian military, for defying the Portuguese authorities' order for complete destruction of Goa.
