KBM ASKS CM NOT TO TAKE PART IN MARATHI MEET: The Konkani Bhasha Mandal has urged Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar not to participate in the All India Marathi Sahitya Sammelan scheduled in Karad-Maharashtra. The KBM also requested the CM to lodge a protest with his Maharashtra counterpart against the ill-conceived plan of Sammelan to insult Konkani language and the Goan people. In a statement, KBM president Shyam Verenkar pointed out that one of the subjects that will be discussed in a seminar during the sammelan is "dialects of Marathi, including the Gomantaki Boli" of Marathi. DUAL CITIZENSHIP: The government yesterday said there was no plan at present to extend the dual citizenship to People of Indian Origin in countries beyond the identified seven nations. PIOs in seven countries including US, UK and Canada are likely to be eligible for dual citizenship. Addressing the Indian diaspora in New Delhi, Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had announced that PIOs in certain countries will be given dual citizenship and a legislation to facilitate it will be introduced in the budge session of Parliament beginning next month. PM Vajpayee told overseas Indians yesterday that it was not their riches but the richness of their experience that India sought. (PTI report in GT)

34 PAKISTANIS RESIDING IN GOA: There are at present 34 Pakistani and nine Bangladeshi nationals residing n Goa. According to statistics available with the Foreigners Branch, out of the 34, 28 Pakistanis are Christians, four Hindus and two Muslims. Every year around 100 Pakistani tourists visit Goa, especially during the St Francis Xavier feast in December. (H)

COPS KEEP WATCH ON ARABS: Though there are no fresh indications of any kind of terrorist activity, the police are closely monitoring the movement of Arab students in the state. (GT)

"VISION DOCUMENT": Speaking at the Legislators' Day function observed to commemorate the holding of the first assembly session 39 years ago on January 9, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said that the Goa State planning board would draw up a Vision document, projecting long-term programmes for the development of the state. The function was attended by the past and present representatives of the people�MPs and MLAs. (H)

ROAD CLEANING VEHICLES: Mormugao Municipal Council has decided to procure two road cleaning vehicles with the help from South Goa MP Ramakant Angle from the MP funds. (GT)

MMC CHAIRPERSON FACES NO TRUST: In a move fraught with wily political implications Mapusa Municipal Council's Vice-Chairperson Sudhir Kandolkar resigned yesterday from his post and a group of six moved a no-confidence motion against Chairperson Michael Carrasco. The six councilors owing allegiance to Law Minister and local MLA Francisco D'Souza stated that they have lost confidence in Carrasco and therefore sought his removal from the office. (H)

SSC SPECIAL COURSES: The Goa Board of secondary and Higher Secondary Education has approved a novel scheme entitled "SSC Special", to offer skilled and job-oriented courses to students at high school level (Std VIII, IX and X). Under the scheme, a student will have to opt for either two or three languages as the case may be, while English is compulsory. (H)

SKULL IN CITY, BODY IN NEURA? After the discovery of a human skull near the Panjim bus stand recently, the Agassaim police today found a head-less and completely decomposed corpse wedged in a rock near the sluice gate at Neura. (H)

ARRESTED FOR BURGLARY: Colva police yesterday arrested one Peter Anthony Rodrigues on the charges of committing a burglary into a flat of British national located at Fatrade-Varca. Police disclosed that Elizabeth Harding had left to her native place along with her husband Derick some months ago and returned yesterday only to notice that the main door was open and valuables lifted away. NEW SIGN BOARDS: State-of-the-art signboards now dot the city's streets in place at the dilapidated, rusted and bent signage that was the bane of motorists. Speaking to Gomantak Times, Panjim municipal Council chief officer, Sanjit Rodrigues, said that the signs had been designed according to international specifications. (GT)

WATER-SPORTS AT COCO BEACH: The Congress party, on behalf of ramponkars residing in the vicinity of Coco beach, have threatened an agitation if the water-sports activity in the region is not stopped within 72 hours. Calangute MLA Agnel Fernandes that that the water sports club had been violating environmental laws and had been threatening the existence of 500 ramponkars residing in the area. "The noise and the turbulence created by the jet skis and other turbo equipment scares fish from the region. The boats also tear apart nets laid out by them," Mr Fernandes claimed. (H)

HOLLYWOOD RULES OVER BOLLYWOOD: Goan theatre owners found some real help from the "reel" "super heroes" last year. They save the day despite a terrible 2002 for the filmi world. James Bond, Xander Cage, Spider Man and Harry Potter all came to the rescue of the local theatre industry, which was plagued by a series of Bollywood flops. Last year saw a number of theatres being renovated and brought on part with national standards. (GT)

VIDEO PARLOURS MAKE HAY: Video parlours that lend out pirated copies of movies are making serious dents, not only to the pockets of theatre owners but also to the state government's exchequer. According to Pravin Zantye, who runs his family's chain of cinemas across the state, Samrat theatre alone paid about Rs.1.20 crore in taxes last year to the State government from ticket sales. "If only one theatre contributes so much money to the state exchequer then imagine the total potential of the industry," he said. (GT)
