SELAULIM PROJECT COST SOARS TO 160 CR: More than 30 years after it was
sanctioned at a cost of Rs.9.61 crore, the price tag of the prestigious
Selaulim Irrigation Project is estimated at Rs.160 crore as per 1997-98
rates. Though the main one-km earthen dam, with a height of 42 metres in
Selaulim village, was completed in 2000, the latest PWD projections
indicate that the 'most delayed project' is expected to crawl towards
completion in all respects by May 2003. The deadline for all works of this
project, which provides 160 MLD of drinking water to a sizeable part of
South Goa, was 1980 but the schedule was revised several times over the

MID-DAY MEAL SCHEME: The mid-day meal scheme, which took off on a wrong
note in Bicholim taluka earlier this month, is now proposed to
re-introduced with non-perishable items on the menu, from next month,
official sources said. (H)
GOA TO HOST FASHION WEEK: The most awaited event in the calendar of the
Indian fashion world, the India Fashion Week, might be held in Goa from 18
to 24 July. The Fashion Week regularly attracts thousands of people
including corporate and showbiz celebrities, international and national
fashion buyers, tourists and other fashion lovers. The event has, over the
past few years, been held only at Mumbai and Delhi but the FDCI is actively
considering Goa as the venue for this year's IFW. (GT)
COW-SLAUGHTER TO BE BANNED: "There will be a complete ban on cow-slaughter
even covering those areas where it has not so far been forbidden," the
Prime Minister said at an election rally of the Bharatiya Janata Party in
Mandi, Himachal Pradesh, on February 20. Mr Vajpayee's remarks came in the
wake of allegations originating from Madhya Pradesh that the Prime Minister
eats beef. "I would rather die than eat beef," Mr Vajpayee said describing
as "cheap", the present style of campaigning by the Congress Party. (UNI

FIRE AT CALANGUTE FACTORY: A major fire broke out on Thursday (Feb 20) at
Alnita Paper Products factory, at Naikavaddo, Calangute, causing a loss of

SAVED FROM AUCTIONEER'S HAMMER: Two vintage cars that transported governors
across Goa for several decades have been saved from the auctioneer's hammer
after Governor Kedar Nath Sahani showed keen interest in retaining the
cars. The black-coloured vehicles Mercedes Benz and Cadillac--which were
imported by the Portuguese from Germany and the USA respectively in 1959,
were due to be auctioned off, apparently after several governors found that
they were just ornaments in the Raj Bhavan garage. But now the Mercedes
Benz will be sent to the Goa state museum while the Cadillac will be used
on ceremonial occasions. (GT)
BRIDGE AT CORJUEM: A proposed bridge between Aldona and its eastern
island-ward of Corjuem, is expected to bring much relief to the 3500-odd
inhabitants of this rustic island, once famous for its onions and chillies.
The proposed cable-stayed bridge will be 210-metre long and is expected to
cost around Rs.21 crore, according to Mr Jude Carvalho, the deputy manager
of the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation which is

GOVT SERVANTS GIVEN EXTENSION: The BJP, which was bitterly critical of the
Rane government in the mid '90s for giving extension in service to
government employees, has now apparently surpassed all records on this
front as from June 2002 the number of extensions has crossed 100, according
to Congress president in Goa, Nirmala Sawant. (H)
DENTAL COLLEGE IN BAD SHAPE: Patients visiting Goa Dental College for
treatment face inconvenience due to lack of medical equipments and its
proper maintenance. On an average about 600 patients visit the hospital
daily for various dental care services. (GT)
CHURCHILL'S W IFE OPERATED: Fatima Alemao, wife of former Chief Minister
Churchill Alemao, underwent a brain tumour operation at the Bombay Hospital
on February 19. When contacted, Churchill said that a tumour, smaller than
a tennis ball size, was removed by a team of doctors headed by Dr KK Turel.

TOILETS ON WATER FRONT: Protection of natural environment is the
fundamental duty of citizens but very few seem to be familiar with that and
often do acts inconsistent with this duty. A good example of this is the
construction of toilets on the river front that flows through the villages.
It has been observed that toilets are built on the edge of the river and
water is polluted and many such toilets are seen at places like Chopde,

GASPAR IS SERAULIM SARPANCH: Gaspar Vaz was unanimously elected sarpanch of
Seraulim panchayat at a special meeting held at the panchayat office on
February 20. The post had fallen vacant after the ouster of Antonio

MARGAO COUNCIL BUDGET: The Standing Committee of Margao Municipal Council
has approved a Rs.40 lakh surplus budget for the financial year 2003-04.,
The estimates project a likely augmentation of revenue on account of the
proposed upward revision of rent of Municipal premises and collection of
transfer fees. The total receipts are pegged at Rs.882.07 lakh, while the
expenditure is shown at Rs.842.99 lakh. (H)
"MAPUSA WILL NEVER BECOME MHAPSA": Nationalist Congress Party general
secretary and spokesperson Surendra Furtado has challenged the Bharatiya
Janata Party legislature representatives that Mapusa town would never be

TWO COMMIT SUICIDE: Raju Shankar Gosavi, a 30-year-old scrap dealer from
Khalchawada in Arvalem-Sanquelim, is believed to have committed suicide by
hanging himself on a cashew tree at Sarvan. In another incident, Ramdas
Dadi Gad (35) of Moira, allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself to
the rafter of his house. (H)

BUILDER HELD: Mapusa police arrested builder, Prakash Venkareddy Kittur,
proprietor of Silent Real Estate Developers, and charged him with criminal
breach of trust. Police said Kittur had earlier obtained a loan of Rs.75
lakh from the Goa State Cooperative Bank but he failed to repay the loan
and also sold 11 flats from the property without informing the bank. (NT)
FOLKLORIST FELICITATED: Vinayak Khedekar, a senior folklorist of Goa as
felicitated for his contribution to the field of folklore by Dr Soumen Sen,
president of Indian Folklore Congress, at a convention held recently in
Kolkata. Scholars from South Asian countries and various states from the
country participated in the convention. "Folk Traditions of Communication
TechniqueGoa Paradigm" was the theme of the paper presented by Khedekar.
The paper described the sonic articulations and sound modulations created
through human vocal chords and musical instruments. (NT)
KAMAL'S EXHIBITION AT ART CHAMBER: Kamal Shah, an artist from Kenya, has
exhibited his neo-ethnic works on canvas at the Art Chamber in Calangute.
In his paintings, Kamal, a man of many talents besides painting, dwells on
primal animistic beliefs, weaving a seamless stretch of multi-culture. The
work will be on display till March 9.
