Health Care Without Harm consultant to speak at Goa Seminars.

The seminars on Medical Waste Disposal in Goa to be held over
the weekend at Miramar will have Dr. Jorge Emmanuel from California,
a consultant for Health Care Without Harm (HCWH) as the main
resource speaker. Dr.Emmanuel is in India to provide expertise
at various programs being held in Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai.
Dr. Jorge Emmanuel is an environmental consultant, chemical engineer,
and chemist specializing in the management of hazardous and
bio hazardous waste. He specializes in the testing and evaluation
of new and emerging medical waste treatment technologies.
He also specializes in medical waste audits, waste minimization,
treatment alternatives for small generators, emission testing of incinerators,
and environmental regulations affecting the health care industry.
He has been a consultant to Healthcare Initiative, various non-governmental
organizations, and numerous hospitals and biomedical laboratories
in the United States and the Caribbean.He is president of
The Environmental & Engineering Research Group based in California.
Some of the issues to be discussed in the Goa seminars are,
risks associated with Medical Waste including problems of
sharps waste,problems with Medical Waste Incineration,
Hazardous (Chemical) Waste from Health Care,Elements
of Medical Waste Management, Classification, Segregation,
Collection, Handling, Transport and Storage, Waste Minimization,
Waste Treatment and Disposal,Non-Incineration Treatment Technologies,
Contingency Planning: Spill Containment and Cleanup,Training and
Public Education, Medical Waste Management Organisation,
Institutional Policies, Waste Management Plans, Monitoring and
Evaluation, Medical Waste regulations in the US and other countries
The other resource persons are Jagruti Bhatia from HOPES who will
focus on the Indian scenario of medical waste management and
Ms. Deepika D'Souza of Mumbai Medwaste Action Group (MMAG) who
will focus on the role of community activists in finding solutions to
Medical waste disposal in Municipal and Village Panchayat areas.
The seminars will have participation from Govt.officials, Village
& Zilla Panchayat members, Municipal Councillors, Doctors,
Nurses, Medical professionals, Hospital & Nursing Homes owners,
environment, health and consumers activists, Trade Unions and NGO's.
The seminars organised by Goa Desc Resource Centre will be held
at the GTDC's Miramar Residency Hall, Miramar from 9.30am to 1.00pm
and 2.30pm to 6pm on Saturday 22nd February and
9.30am to 1.00pm on Sunday 23rd February.
