To prevent damage to currency notes and in response to public complaints about multiple stapling and over writing on notes, the Reserve Bank of India has, in public interest, issued a Directive under Section 35A of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949, prohibiting the stapling of currency notes/note packets.
All public sector banks, private sector banks, co-operative banks, foreign banks, credit societies, government departments and members of public are advised not to staple the currency notes/ note packets and not to write anything on notes.
Further, - Banks are requested to issue only unstapled, good quality notes to the public. - The public should accept only good quality unstapled notes from the banks. If some branches are not able to provide unstapled notes, this may be brought to the notice of the bank's Head Office.
