HUNDREDS FLOCK TO SEE 'BLEEDING' PICTURE: Reports that a picture of Sacred Heart of Jesus was bleeding in a house at Camorlim (Ambora) caused a stir in the village and adjoining localities. People flocked to the church of Our Lady of Candelaria where the picture was shifted at the instance of the parish priest. It was 14-year-old Steffy Fernandes who claimed to have seen the dripping of blood from the picture on Wednesday (Feb 26) at 11 pm while she was studying for her SSC exams at her aunt's house. "The holy picture was kept in an open cupboard as its glass had broken and I always kept looking at it," she said. She felt a strange sensation and saw 'tears of blood' from the eyes of Jesus. She called her aunt, Maria Joaquina Mascarenhas, who also confirmed what she saw. (GT)

FIRST PREFERENCE TO GOANS: A rally organised by Goa Hit-Rakhan Manch at Azad Maidan, Panjim, on February 27, sent a message loud and clear to the government as well as the private sector that the first preference for jobs has to be given to Goans failing which the organisation said it will not hesitate to react violently to protect Goan interests. The rally also demanded that as land is scarce, the government should evolve some mechanism restricting its sale to people of non-Goan origin on the lines being done in some North-Eastern States. GHM has strongly demanded that the government follow the two rulesknowledge of Konkani and 15 years domicilein letter and spirit besides proper implementation of the Official Language Act, in order to ensure that jobs go to Goan youth. To begin with the GHM has served an ultimatum of 15 days to the Kala Academy to cancel the appointment of two music teachers, who were recently appointed from Karnataka, that too without inviting applications. DEFICIT MOUNTS: Calling for fiscal consolidation in the face of mounting deficit at 5.9 per cent last year, the pre-budget economic survey on February 27 suggested a two-pronged strategy of augmentation of revenues through tax reforms and restraining of expenditure that includes targeting subsidies by rationalizing prices of food, fertilizers, LPG and kerosene. ST XAVIER'S FELICITATES TEACHERS: "An institution is a product of the cumulative efforts of the students, staff and principals, who have passed through the institution in the course of years," remarked principal Newman Fernandes. Newman was speaking at a recently held felicitation function for the teachers of ST Xavier's College who attained superannuation in the academic year 2001-2002. (GT)

ONE LAKH NEW BJP MEMBERS: The BJP has enrolled one lakh new members in the ongoing membership drive being conducted by the party cadre in Goa, according to BJP Goa state president Laxmikant Parsekar. (GT)

HOTELIERS FOR GRADING SYSTEM: The South Goa Hotel Owners' Association has demanded that restaurants and eating houses in Goa should be graded as per the system adopted in metropolitan cities like Mumbai, depending on the area and type of restaurant. (NT)

BUDGET MAY RAISE IT EXEMPTION LIMIT: The Union Budget for 2003-04 to be presented today (Feb 28) may raise income tax exemption limit to Rs.70,000-80,000 and retain standard deductions along with tax sops for small savings and housing loans, while undertaking 'clean up' operation of tax administration besides measures to spur growth. SALVADOR DO MUNDO PANCHAYAT BUDGET: The Salvador do Mundo panchayat has projected an income of Rs.46.46 lakh in the budget estimates for 2003-04, while earmarking Rs.30.15 lakh for public works in the village. This was discussed at the gram sabha meeting of the panchayat on Sunday at Umbra. (H)

PORTUGUESE CITIZENSHIP: the Consulate General of Portugal has informed the public that according to instructions received from the authorities in Portugal, that from 1 March 2003, until 1 June 2003, any and all acts pertaining to the acquisition of Portuguese nationality, including attestation of documents, will be suspended. NAVY INVOLVES FISHING TRAWLERS: Indian Navy would take into confidence the fishing trawler owners in their exercise of patrolling seashores. Taking the first step in this regard, the naval officials in their recently concluded week-long "war exercise" on the west coast hired fishing trawlers to transport their officials in deep sea destinations. Naval sources disclosed that the ability of trawlers to stay for long in the sea and venture at a distance of 150 nautical miles from the seashore makes them sustainable during emergencies like war. ORACLE TO HIRE SOFTWARE DEVELOPERS: Oracle Corpn, world's number two soft-ware company, plans to hire about 2,000 lower-paid software developers in India in the next two years. Oracle's growing employee base in India and China is part of an increasing trend to shift operations, especially support operations, to lower cost developing countries, the Silicon Valley Business Ink reported. EXHIBITION AT ST JOSEPH'S: On the occasion of Science Day, St Joseph's High School, Arpora, will organise a school exhibition today (Feb 28) at its premises. The principal of St Xavier's college, Mr Newman Fernandes will inaugurate the exhibition. (NT)

ROMANCE AT ANY AGE: Leading pop singer and composer Remo Fernandes said the older generations were as much spirited in their expressions of love as the younger generations. Speaking as the chief guest at a function organised at a city hotel to distribute prize to the winners of "The Navhind Times-Grandis Hollywood Homes Valentine Love Messages contest", Remo pointed out to an 83-year-old winner and said her creative expression showed that love and romance can flourish at any age. MARKETING INFRASTRUCTURE: "We readily and enthusiastically endorse the suggestion of the Governor, Kidar Nath Sahani, that young people should seek and exploit opportunities for self-employment rather than crave for government jobs. But we have strong doubts if the areas that the Governor has stressed, such as dairy farming, floriculture and pottery, really offer self-employment opportunities in the State." (Edit in Herald)

CARNIVAL PARADE: The Carnival float parade in Panaji will be held on March 1. The parade will begin from 3 pm onwards. However, the floats will gather and line up below the Mandovi bridge from 1 pm onwards. The route for the parade is from below Mandovi bridge-New Patto bridge-riverside road of DBB Marg and culmination at the Kala Academy. (NT)
